HELMETS - Batfink - 31-12-2012

Hey all.. just got my new helmet after using my old RXT fullface for many years. Yep it was acheapy and at high speeds I was left with rub marks onmy chin (when I didn;t have a goatie) and nose but I liked the feel.
The new helmet is a Nolan N104 flip face. Been lookin at getting a flipper for a while as I like the idea of being able to change the helmet for different rides. up for slow city running and down for out of city. Also use the ease of opening helmet to go pay for fuel or quick trips into shops. **side note** why do I have to take off my helmet when others can wear a full face cover??

Anyway... been on a few nice 100+ k rides and this is what I have found..
it's tighter and stiffer than what I am used to. Not to small just the padding is a bit firmer but I guess it IS new so I need to wear it in.
The weight is, needless to say, a lot lighter which I have appreciated (got plate screwed into neck a few yrs ago and haven't been able to do long rides) and the noise is less. I was hoping the noise what a lot less but it's bearable.
The vent system is amazing, I can actually feel air in helmet when opened all the way unlike the old RXT which I think had cling wrap hiden under vents.
I am in love with the internal sunvisor... it sits just above nose bridge and reduces glare magnificantly.. be prepared to be blinded when you decide to use the instant withdraw button while still in sun. IT DOES just pop up LOL
The main visor gives so much viewing window it feels like an open face when first put on after wearing the tunnel visoned RXT
So far I am only putting helmet onand off with chin guard up as I can spread the opening more for my overly fat head to fit through it.. I did it once when closed but I had serval beers and couldn;t feel the full effect LOL
I found some forced moulding of the compressed EPC stopped the pressure on my ear tips and the comfort increased...

Over all I will give this helmet a BIG THUMBS UP

RE: HELMETS - 2001gixxer - 31-12-2012

Great review fink...
If anyone is after an alternative helmet, Action are having a run out sale of all the old RSI and S800 Shark helmets.
I know there are a few people heading out for the new models with the integrated sunvisor, but if your after something that is cheap but still good quality, take a look at their site...
I purchased my old RSI many years ago and was due for a replacement. Couldn't go past the value for money.
For $250 I picked up a new RSI for men and S800 for my daughter... and i even received an extra visor.

I believe they only have selected sizes, but do have about a dozen different styles and colors to pick from.

RE: HELMETS - Batfink - 08-01-2013

UPDATE

worked out some of the "noise" experiencing is from the sun visor lever slide allowing air to enter halmets inner shell. Will try some simple mods (good old 100 mile'n'hr tape) to seal inner side without restricting slide mechanism

RE: HELMETS - Ward P - 08-01-2013

As a cheapie, I bought 2x KBCs for much less than a new Shoei. (his & hers)
Good for highway but no good if you go head down bum up. I ended buying another shoei. I'm a great believer in "you get what hour pay for". Much better vision when layin on the tank.

RE: HELMETS - DjPete - 08-01-2013

I wonder, is there that much difference between an expensive helmet and a medium prices helmet safety wise? They all have to pass certain safety standards. Is something like a Shoei much better safety wise? Curious

RE: HELMETS - revhead - 08-01-2013

as you know they all go through the same testing ,Alot of people believe the more you pay the safer youl be ,which is b/s, ive worn 1k helmets the and $199 helmets ,all the diffs were wind noise and the cloth used in the cheaper ones feels like sand paper, the dakar im wearing has a little wind noise ,thats about all ,ive got about 7 helmets less then 4 yrs old, and they all have there differences ,

whats that silly saying ,how much is your head worth, well your neck will snap before the helmet squashes

what i did was to read everything i could read in re-gards to helmet testing and laws, i do get alot of grief bc a lot of people believe the more they spend ,well if there happy wearing 1k plus on there head ,then having to chuck said 1k helmet away after 1 year of solid sweat ,melting the foam away inside ,hey be my guest! what happens is the foam takes the shape of your face head etc, then it begins to loosen in time ,then in the case of an accident the foam gives way and you end up with brain damage!bc youve worn the same helmet for 5 to 10 years.Pi_tongue
there isalways someone out there that knows more ,this is my point only cheers!

RE: HELMETS - Batfink - 09-01-2013

don't forget the weight difference!!!

More expensive helmets are made from lighter weight materials like LEXAN which can make a big difference on YOUR neck for long rides... This was my main factor in buying a helmet as I am finally up to doing longer distances after have 2 discs in my upper neck replaced with a titanium plate. Even with eyes closed and helmets in a bag I can easily tell the difference between my old RXT and the Nolan in weight. And @ about $450 I call it a medium cost, like rev I can't justify spending $1K on a can and I am not really a brand name.

Factors I considered when buying a helmet,,
1. they conform and have AS sticker
2. weight
3. vents that work
4. offer good visability
5. earodynamics
6. cost
7. colour

RE: HELMETS - Batfink - 10-01-2013

MOst of noise fixed on new Nolan N104 helmet!!

Yep I was right... the sunvisor slide mechanism was allowing air into the inner shell which while was not overly noisy it was something I thought could be eliminated. Using good ole' gaffa tape I covered the slide inside the helmet (using some tape stuck to covering tape to make a non stick area directly over sliding components). This has dropped down any air noise by 80%+. The next thing is to look at the plastic cover plate for OEM communications wiring. I think it's the same thing... by allowing the penetration and openings for com wires it also allows air. might use a simple stripe of medium density foam cut and pressed into cavity.

over all I still rate this helmet highly and so far it is top of my list when I need to replace it.

P.S. found my head shape made the Shark and a KTM not comfortable.

RE: HELMETS - Shifu - 10-01-2013

Try the ear plugs. That fixes it easiest and quickest Pi_thumbsup
