Now this one is up my alley Tony.
I'm personally not keen on Townsville or Cairns but the area between them in gods country if you don't mind the odd cyclone. I lost two homes to cyclones up there before I moved to Adelaide.
The areas around Innisfail, Tully and Millaa Millaa are superb, but there's no way you'll see all there is to see in a couple of days....
Try and include some of these in your travels:
1) Tully Falls.
2) Paronella Park near Mena Creek.
3) Etty Bay & Mourilyan Harbour.
4) The waterfall circuit around Millaa Millaa. The lookout is nice at dusk too.
5) The Boulders near Babinda.
The list goes on and on.
I really do miss the place but I reckon the humidity would kill me now.
I lived in Innisfail and around this area for many years and it's a great place to live, also the closest place to the outer reef.....the fishings great too.......
Oh, I'm getting homesick...

I grew up in T'ville (Brownsville)...left when I was 21.
I have been back a couple of times and by Christ its changed a hell of a lot.
Far too big now.
Workwise you're probably better off in T'ville, much more industry there whereas Cairns is more tourist type work (hospitality).
Locations in the Ville I'd probably look at Kirwan, Upper Ross or go rural where I grew up at Black River, Jensen or Bushland Beach.
Locations for Cairns I'd be looking at Redlynch, some nice places in there.

If I had to pick between the two I'd run with Cairns, much more to do up there than T'ville.

I could be up there soon myself.

Went up to Ayr.
Took me all day to get there from Brisbane!

Up North my favourite is Port Douglas rather than Cairns.

Don't mind the Gillies Hwy up to Atherton,
Thought that was an entertaining bit of road.

Work ain't the biggest issue for me Zoro... being part of the Woolworths chain of stores now I can keep my eye on internal job offerings

We are also considering WA and Brisbane

just never want to see a frost again

Then I'd go for Cairns.
Cape Tribulation is the pick of the bunch for me, I'd move there tomorrow.
No Woolies there unfortunately.

Stop in at The Frosty Mango on your way up to Cairns, its about 40mins north of the Ville.
Enjoy the warmth, make sure you remember to carry on a jacket when you fly back home.
