Well another weekend is about to kick off with the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP which should make for some interesting racing as no one has raced on the circuit before so with any luck it may even up the field a little even though the factory boys should still be leading the way.

The 1st round of Free Practice is not for a few hours yet so until then some light reading for those interested.

So go the Aussies.Australia2

Rossi Biting at the Bit to get out on the Track

MotoGP World Championship leader Valentino Rossi was excited about the weekend ahead of him in the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix press conference on Thursday.

Speaking to the media in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway media centre on Thursday afternoon, on the eve of MotoGP´s historic first ever Indianapolis weekend, standings leader and motorsport icon Valentino Rossi was excited about getting a first sample of the new layout at the famous American venue.

`This track is a bit strange because it was built for cars and has been modified so everybody is quite curious to try it with our MotoGP bikes,´ commented Rossi. `The complex is fantastic, this place is full of history and it is fascinating to see a track with hundreds of thousands of seats to see a race.´

Still buzzing after his superb victory on home territory at Misano Rossi summarised the championship situation saying, `I am coming here after a very good race, a very good result for me. I am in good shape, I am riding quite well and I have been very fast recently so I am very happy about that. My advantage in the championship is quite big after these recent races, but there are five to go and it is still a long way until the end of the season.´

Having arrived in the United States last weekend Rossi has been enjoying his latest `American adventure´ and told the press, `This week I have launched the new Yamaha R1 in Las Vegas and then I have been in New York for two days. Not many people recognised me there so it was almost like having a normal life! But of course our target is to try and improve the popularity in the U.S. and you can see when we go to Laguna that it is already much bigger than when we went there three years ago.´

Rossi´s former Fiat Yamaha team-mate, Colin Edwards, the Texan rider who now represents the Tech 3 Yamaha team, was alongside the Italian on Thursday´s rider panel and provided his own thoughts on the mystique of Indianapolis.

`It is hard to explain how big Indianapolis is in the States,´ said Edwards. `I mean when I was a kid on Indy 500 weekend the country just basically shut down! It was like the Superbowl of racing at the time. As a kid growing up with that it left me with great memories of Indy.´

Stoner wants to Enjoy whats left of the Season
Though Casey Stoner has only an outside chance of retaining his MotoGP title he is determined to enjoy the rest of the 2008 season.

Determined not to let his nagging scaphoid injury and the 75-point World Championship deficit to standings leader Valentino Rossi affect his confidence, the MotoGP title holder Casey Stoner remains positive about the rest of the season.

The Australian has crashed out of the last two Grands Prix at Brno and Misano, allowing Rossi to surge ahead in the title fight, but the consistently competitive performances of his Ducati Desmosedici GP8 mean Stoner is still upbeat about what he can achieve in the remaining five rounds of the year – starting with the exciting first MotoGP visit to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Stoner always enjoys travelling to the United States and commented, `I can´t wait to go back to America and race at Indianapolis, a circuit nobody knows but where I am sure our bike and tyres will work just as well as they have done at the last few races.´

`Obviously I´m not happy with the results of the last few races,´ continued the talented 22 year-old. `We have proved that we are consistently fast but that clearly isn´t enough. I know that I have got the support of a great team and a bike I have a great feeling with. I´m going to try to enjoy riding it over the final few races, which all take place at circuits I like a lot.´

Acknowledging the possible distraction his wrist problem could cause, however, Stoner explained the dilemma he faces with the injury, which could become aggravated as the season concludes.

He admitted, `I have to think about the scaphoid that we thought had healed back in 2003, but is still giving me problems. For the time being I have to deal with it but we´re talking to the doctors about what to do with it in the future.´

Ducati´s MotoGP Project Director Livio Suppo is certainly backing Stoner to do a good job, but also sounded a note of caution about the troublesome injury.

`Casey has an incredible ability to adapt to new things so I think he can do really well on a circuit that is unknown to everybody,´ declared Suppo. `We´re hoping that the problems he had with his wrist at Misano don´t prevent him from riding at his maximum this weekend. Casey underwent a CAT scan last week, which showed that the scaphoid he fractured and had operated on back in 2003 has never completely healed. With the support of a pool of doctors over the next few weeks, Casey will decide if another operation is going to be necessary.´

Hayden on the Move

Repsol Honda rider Nicky Hayden had plenty to say on Thursday ahead of his home race at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Having done so much work to promote the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix this year, with two demonstration rides at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway undertaken in April and May, Nicky Hayden is determined to enjoy the experience this weekend despite his injury problems.

Hayden has not ridden since Laguna Seca in July due to a heel injury and still need crutches to walk, but he is excited about racing in Indiana, so close to his hometown of Owensboro, in the neighbouring state of Kentucky.

On the build-up to the historic MotoGP Indy date Hayden commented, `It just doesn´t seem real. Yesterday driving up here from home I was half way here by the time I would normally just be getting to the airport to fly off somewhere else. I have never really road-raced so close to home in my life. It is an awesome opportunity for me and for MotoGP.´

Confirming that he would be leaving Honda at the end of the current campaign, Hayden noted that he had achieved a great deal with his current team and stopped short of naming who he will be riding for in 2009, despite huge press speculation linking him with Ducati.

`I know it´s going to be a big change for me, and hopefully the announcement will be coming soon,´ he commented. `But still, there´s five races to go this season. That´s a lot of racing. I have had a long history with Honda. We´ve had a lot of good races together, won championships in the AMA, and obviously the World Championship was the big one. But I think it´s time to move on, try something different.´

Meanwhile, when asked for his thoughts on his team-mate Dani Pedrosa´s sensational mid-season switch from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres Hayden revealed, `It is quite a touchy subject. I was shocked when I found out. I wasn´t asked and I kind of heard on the street. In Misano they told me before the race and I couldn´t believe it like everyone else.´

`I doesn´t really change a whole lot for me,´ added the 2006 World Champion. `I mean it is one less rider on Michelins which I think hurts. It is getting close to being a `spec´ tyre now as there are only five or six of us left that are not on Bridgestone.´

`Obviously there will now be a wall down the middle of the pit-box, but to be honest there was already a bit of a wall there. So it doesn´t change a whole lot. I guess it is a bit of a drama and in MotoGP there is never a dull day!´

Hayden was also asked if there was any truth to a rumour that he could split with Honda before the end of the current campaign, but denied the suggestion and responded, `I do not have any intention not to do the rest of the season with Honda. That seems crazy. That was what some people thought after Misano but I owe it to Honda to go out and race. I think they know that, or at least the guys in my team do. I am not going to lay down until the very end at Valencia. Unless they lock the door over there on me I am going over there and getting on the bike!´

`It could happen,´ quipped Hayden light-heartedly. `There are probably people in that box that if I didn´t show up would probably never notice! But no, I plan on going to race.´
Cheers Rev. Appreciating the formatting too mate.

West makes his mark in wet first Indianapolis MotoGP session
Friday, 12 September 2008

Anthony West thrived on the appearance of rain in the maiden MotoGP session held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The gentlemen of MotoGP started their engines for their first ever practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday morning, with the opening laps of preparation for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix taking place under wet conditions and the threat of Hurricane Ike.

The double challenge of learning the track and navigating a slippery surface was best overcome by Kawasaki´s Anthony West, the fastest rider round the American circuit with a lap of 1´53.034. Notorious for his affinity for the wet, the Australian was just over a tenth of a second quicker than any other rider, with MotoGP Rookie Alex de Angelis the closest to matching his time.

Always quick on the uptake, 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner was unable to continue his run of free practice dominance on his maiden Indianapolis outing. The Ducati rider was close behind his fellow Australian, however, just 0.156 down on West´s marker. He suffered a light lowside at the end of the session.

JiR Team Scot´s Andrea Dovizioso led the Michelin charge in fourth on the timesheet, whilst home rider John Hopkins and Rizla Suzuki´s recently-renewed Chris Vermeulen completed the top six.

Jorge Lorenzo placed seventh fastest in the session, ahead of two local riders in the forms of 2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden and newly-crowned AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies. Toni Elias rounded off the top ten, whilst current World Championship leader Valentino Rossi could only manage the eleventh quickest time.

Involved in the battle for second place in the series, Dani Pedrosa had a difficult start to his association with Bridgestone, rounding off the field some 3.8 seconds off the pace in the 1.5 hour extended session.

West shines through on wet opening day at Indianapolis
Friday, 12 September 2008

Anthony West came out best from a soaking day of action at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The MotoGP World Championship´s first day of action at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway saw attention turning away from the impressive new circuit and towards the skies, as torrential rain hit the American track during the 800cc action at The Brickyard.

Whilst the conditions were to few riders´ tastes as they looked to set up their bikes from scratch, wet weather star Anthony West was able to settle in nicely onboard the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR. The Australian star is known for his adaptation to new tracks and ability to perform amidst a deluge, and didn´t disappoint Stateside with a 1´53.034 lap of the IMS circuit in the opening practice session. He was also the fastest in the second run under even heavier rain, albeit with a slower time.

The Kawasaki rider was out to impress as he looks for a ride for 2009, and at the very least put himself on the highlight reel for the day with a spectacular save from the brink of a huge highside in Free Practice 2. With the meteorological picture unlikely to change this weekend, West could be one of the principal beneficiaries.

With no rider able to improve on their times in the second session, Alex de Angelis retained his second place on the combined standings list, a tenth of a second behind West. The San Carlo Honda Gresini rider pushed hard on his afternoon run, going off-track and onto the grass onboard his satellite RC212V.

Reigning World Champion Casey Stoner did not seem too shaken up from a morning crash when he continued his Indianapolis adaptation process, and he remains the rider with the third fastest time from Friday. Andrea Dovizioso was the highest placing Michelin rider with the French fabricant´s range of wet rubber, ahead of Bridgestone-shod Kawasaki and Suzuki riders John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen.

Jorge Lorenzo, the home duo of Nicky Hayden &Ben Spies, plus form-rider Toni Elias, completed the top ten.

Series leader Valentino Rossi looked more at home in the second session, although he did take a trip off-track to the banked first oval corner -not featured in the MotoGP layout- during the run.

The only rider who improved upon their morning times was Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa, getting acclimatised to new Bridgestone tyres, a new engine and the all-new circuit.

The final placing American was Colin Edwards in fifteenth, but rather than `The Texas Tornado´, the main focus of the day was the predicted arrival of Hurricane Ike, which could hit Indiana over the course of the weekend.

Well the Brickyard is proving to be a challenge for some of our normal suspects so now we will have to wait a few hours and see what happens in Qualifying and I spose for the Aussies out there it's a little dispointing to see the Aussies so far down the list but that all could change and Pedrosa appears to being doing OK on the Bridgestone but hey it's only early days..

Elias tops Saturday morning session on drying Indianapolis track
Saturday, 13 September 2008

Toni Elias led the way as the MotoGP riders experienced improved conditions at The Brickyard.

After the near-washout of Friday at The Brickyard, the MotoGP riders were given a near-full dry session to round off their Free Practice activity. The damp Indianapolis circuit was rapidly cleared in most places by some pleasant temperatures, leading to times some ten seconds faster than those recorded yesterday.

The quickest rider of what could perhaps be the only dry run of the weekend was Alice Team´s Toni Elias, recording a 1´43.708 time as `leadership´ of the session changed thick and fast.

World Championship leader Valentino Rossi had been confident of his potential in the dry, something confirmed with his becoming the second fastest rider of the weekend so far. The Fiat Yamaha man was just 0.072 slower than Elias´ marker, with local hero Nicky Hayden and his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa all under two-tenths of a second from the top spot. Pedrosa had been the last classified rider on Friday in the wet, getting to grips with a completely new track and package.

Andrea Dovizioso was the fastest of the Honda satellite lineup on Saturday morning behind the bars of his JiR Team Scot RC212V, with San Carlo Honda Gresini´s Alex de Angelis just behind. Ben Spies, Sylvain Guintoli, Chris Vermeulen and Randy de Puniet rounded off the fastest ten in the session.

2007 World Champion Casey Stoner was surprisingly off the pace in the dry, in seventeenth place and some 2´186 off Elias´ time, although tyre choice may have had much to do with the separation between the factory and satellite Ducati competitors. His fellow Australian Anthony West went from being the fastest rider on Friday to the slowest on Saturday

Well it appears that we maybe in for another Rossi and Stoner battle with Rossis team mate to put his two bobs worth in as well. So what was Stoner up to all weekend except for the 1st day of practice he hasn't showed on the board except for today in the final qualifying but we will have to wait and see. Heres the report as well as the qualifying results and how they will line up for the race on Monday morning.

Rossi ends Stoner streak for Indianapolis pole
Saturday, 13 September 2008

Valentino Rossi took pole position for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix on Saturday, ahead of rival Casey Stoner.

The thousands of racefans getting their first taste of MotoGP action in Indianapolis will be treated to a star studded front row on Sunday, with World Championship leader Valentino Rossi lining up alongside reigning titlist Casey Stoner.

Rossi ended Stoner´s attempts at an eighth consecutive pole position with a stunning 1´40.776 lap of the IMS circuit, less than a tenth of a second faster than his title rival. It is the Fiat Yamaha man´s second top spot of the season, and a perfect placing from which to try and extent his own streak –that of three successive race victories.

All eyes will be on the MotoGP World Championship´s top two as they do battle from the front row for the seventh time this year, although there is not much separating the duo from the rest of the field at the newest circuit on the calendar. Rossi´s teammate Jorge Lorenzo qualified on the first line with his own late lap.

As a result of Lorenzo´s last minute heroics, local hero Nicky Hayden was relegated to fourth place on the grid, at the head of the second row and in a position to put himself in the fight for a homecoming victory. The Repsol Honda rider is accompanied by fellow American and Rizla Suzuki wildcard Ben Spies, with the newly crowned three-time AMA Superbike champion making his presence felt at his home track with some speedy qualifying laps.

Randy de Puniet rounds off row two, the highest placing Honda satellite rider onboard the LCR RC212V. Both the Frenchman and JiR Team Scot´s Andrea Dovizioso took their customer bikes round in times only slightly faster than factory rider Dani Pedrosa, in the Spaniard´s first extensive encounter with Bridgestone qualifying tyres.

Despite a crash on his own Bridgestone qualifying rubber, Toni Elias was still able to place at the tail end of row three, whilst there was a lowside tumble for Rizla Suzuki´s Chris Vermeulen at turn six midway through the session. Weather at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was sunny and the track dry, in sharp contrast to Friday but perhaps not exactly what the riders will experience when they hear the famous command of `Gentlemen, start your engines´.

busakid08 Wrote:GRoan - and as usual Casey is whining and whinging ....... abnd borong as batshit to interview

Is this what you mean by whining & whinging, well I think it's good to see that Ducati and Stoner are showing that they are just like everyone else and have problems that they have to work throuhg as well and that's what racing is all about.
Why are people so crticial of Stoner I just wish I was half as good but I'm not so good luck to him...

A breakdown in the morning session proved costly for Casey Stoner, whose pole streak ended in Indianapolis.

Casey Stoner was left lamenting a technical problem from the morning free practice session on Saturday, which took up valuable time in his quest to fine tune his setup. The Australian lines up second on the grid after his run of seven pole positions came to an end, whilst teammate Marco Melandri was having problems of his own down in eighteenth.

Casey Stoner - Second
`The breakdown this morning cost us some valuable time during the best part of the session in terms of track condition, so we paid the price for that this afternoon. I was struggling to find grip on the front end and we spent so much time working it out that we didn´t have much time to put in a qualifying lap at the end. To be honest I thought we´d be lucky to get on the front two rows. As it happened we got a surprisingly decent lap together and to end up second fastest is much better than we expected so finally it was not so bad. It means my pole run has come to end but that had to happen eventually and the important thing is we have a good position for tomorrow. Now we have to wait and see what the weather does but we have work still to do on the bike in warm-up whatever the conditions.´
Marco Melandri - Eighteenth
`I´m really disappointed with this second day because we haven´t managed to find a good set-up for the race tomorrow. I haven´t got grip on the front or the rear and I can´t afford to take any risks by pushing too hard. I don´t know if we´ll have time to do anything about it in the 20-minute warm-up tomorrow so I expect it will be a very tough race.´

Go Stoner Australia2 and I'm tipping him to win....
Well fellars thought I would post some light reading just to keep us up to date with whats going around..

Pedrosa comes to Terms with Bridgestone

Learning `on the job´, Dani Pedrosa placed eighth in his first ever qualifying session with Bridgestone tyres.

Aside from the briefest of runouts in his five hours of testing at Misano, Dani Pedrosa had never used Bridgestone qualifying tyres before Saturday´s baptism of fire in Indianapolis. The Repsol Honda rider placed eighth in the session, earning him a spot on the third row of the grid.

Dani Pedrosa - Eighth
`Today was the first time that I have used Bridgestone qualifying tyres, so it was quite difficult because I was trying to study the tyres while at the same time trying to push for the best possible-grid position. The fact with qualifying tyres is that you can only be really fast once you know them very well. I was able improve my times with my third qualifier, so I think the third row is not such a bad result, considering the circumstances. As for race tyres, I wasn´t able to do too many consecutive laps because we had so little dry-track time. Therefore we still need to define some details for race-tyre choice but overall I feel quite fine. We also need to work to better understand my new machine, which is very different from the machine I had been using, especially considering the electronics. All in all, I´m confident, we are gaining important experience and improving every time I go out. I hope we will have a dry race tomorrow. If it´s going to rain like it did yesterday afternoon then we will discuss with Race Direction the best course of action.´

Haydens Confindence is building for the Race.

Home rider Nicky Hayden ignored the pain in his injured right foot to put his Honda RC212V fourth on the grid at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Sporting a special helmet featuring the logo of his favourite NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts, local hero Nicky Hayden was back on form in qualifying for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix - as he secured a starting slot at the head of the second row.

The rain which affected Friday´s proceedings was nowhere to be seen on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon at the new Indianapolis Motor Speedway track, and Hayden looked far more comfortable than on his ill-fated and short-lived Misano appearance, as he qualified fourth for what will be his first race since Laguna Seca in July.

The 2006 World Champion was very briefly on provisional pole, but ended up just missing out on the front row by 0.094s - and after a similarly strong showing in the Saturday morning free practice session he was upbeat about his prospects for Sunday´s historic first ever race at his new home circuit.

`Things are certainly a lot better than they were on Friday, when I felt miserable out there!´ Hayden told motogp.com. `I was hydroplaning and really had no confidence, but today I took the skirt off it and gassed it up a little bit. The bike was working really well and in these conditions I quite like the track, it has got some flowing sections to it.´

Acknowledging the support from his chief mechanic Pete Benson and his staff of mechanics, Hayden added, `The team did a good job, we have made some definite improvements and I feel a lot better. My race pace wasn´t too bad so hopefully we can be competitive tomorrow.´

Commenting on the condition of his right foot, in which he has a broken bone in the heel, Hayden stated, `It is definitely a lot better than at Misano and the track is going left here a lot more. It is not tearfully painful, but it stings. There is some more strength in it.´

With predictions that Hurricane Ike could be headed in the direction of the new IMS MotoGP layout on Sunday, Hayden looked ahead to the race, saying, `It would be awesome for all these fans and for everybody who has waited a long time in this part of the world to see MotoGP, if they could get to see a real dry race. But whatever the conditions are I have just got to ride as hard as I can, and have some fun. I don't have a lot to lose, I just need to try and get in there and be competitive.´

What's Sete upto is he Going to Try his Luck Again LOL

Pablo Nieto has confirmed that sponsors Onde 2000 are working on a project to bring Sete Gibernau back into MotoGP next season on Ducati satellite machinery.

The sons of Spanish racing hero and MotoGP Legend Angel Nieto, Pablo and Gelete, are working hard with sponsors Onde 2000 and Ducati Corse to bring Sete Gibernau back into the World Championship in 2009.

Gibernau, who was twice runner-up in MotoGP before his retirement from racing in 2006, has tested with Ducati this year and has made it clear that he would love to make a Grand Prix comeback.

The Nieto brothers are assisting the 35 year-old star from Barcelona in making that dream a reality and are close to finalising a plan with their sponsors, Spanish property development company Onde 2000, and Italian manufacturers Ducati – which could result in five bikes from the Borgo Panigale factory on the 2009 grid.

Speaking to motogp.com on Saturday at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, Pablo Nieto stated, `It´s still a little bit early to say for sure. But it is true that we have been talking to Ducati and to Sete, and it would be a very nice project for next year. It´s very difficult to go into MotoGP but we have the possibility and in the next couple of days it should become clearer.´

`It is almost done,´ continued the Spanish 125cc rider, `but we have a lot of small things to finalise and Ducati have almost given the `Ok´, Sete has almost said `Ok´ and it should be sorted soon because Ducati need to know for certain for next year, so they can provide the bikes. It is very important for us and for our sponsors, we are nearly there but we just can´t confirm it yet.´

Asked whether he or his brother Gelete could be involved in the management structure of the new team, Pablo replied, `That is the problem. I am riding in 125c and maybe next year I am going to ride in 250cc. My brother is now the manager of our team, and all the team will have to be completely new. That is slightly problematic because in MotoGP the teams are very big, with lots of people involved and we have to finalise all these things.´
Poor old Westy , from the top of the table to the bottom in one foul swoop.
He really does have webbed feet that boy.
Rossi's playing mind games again. What's that cunning bastard up to now?
pfft
Well it's race day and this morning warm up has proved to be all Stoner as he is over 1/2 second quicker than his sparring partner Rossi so now we will have to see what will unfold during the race.

Will the Remains of Hurricane Ike chuck a spanner in the Works

Despite clear blue skies early on Sunday morning, the remains of Hurricane Ike are expected to arrive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at around midday.

Although the calm, pleasant conditions early on Sunday would suggest otherwise, raceday at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix could be affected by similar weather conditions to those experienced on Friday at the inaugural MotoGP event at the Brickyard.

The tail-end of Hurricane Ike is expected to deliver strong winds and heavy rain to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as of midday - which could mean dry warm-ups followed by wet races for all three MotoGP World Championship categories.

Competitive action commences early at the World famous American venue and latest addition to the MotoGP calendar, with the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies and the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies squaring up in the Red Bull Riders Cup race at 10.25am, immediately after the 125cc, 250cc and MotoGP warm-ups – with the young riders keeping their fingers crossed for dry conditions.

Whatever the weather, all eyes will be firmly fixed on the main event at 3pm local time when the MotoGP race gets underway, with American riders Nicky Hayden (fourth on the grid) and Ben Spies (fifth) aiming to chase down front rowers Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo right from the word go.

Ducati´s Casey Stoner was quickest in the MotoGP Sunday warmup session.

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner led off the MotoGP Warmup session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a 1´41.553 morning lap, showing some fearsome pace to put himself some six-tenths of a second ahead of poleman Valentino Rossi.

The top eight in the session were separated by less than a second, indicating that the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand prix could be one of the closest races of the 2008 season. Toni Elias will be looking to challenge for another podium from the third row on the grid, and placed third in the session ahead of Shinya Nakano, local rider Nicky Hayden, Andrea Dovizioso, Jorge Lorenzo and Chris Vermeulen.

The morning run went ahead without the presence of rain, although there could yet be some precipitation at the track before the afternoon is out.

Melandri is of to Kawasaki Next Season

Michael Bartholemy, Kawasaki Racing´s Competition Manager, confirmed on Sunday morning that the factory team had secured the services of Marco Melandri for the next two years.

Former 250cc World Champion and MotoGP runner-up Marco Melandri will ride for Kawasaki in 2009 and 2010, having signed a contract with `Team Green´ at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The move had been on the cards for several weeks, with Melandri himself having already stated his intention to move to Kawasaki in the post-race test at Brno last month.

Kawasaki boss Michael Bartholemy told motogp.com, `A few hours ago we secured Marco Melandri after eighteen months of negotiations -we started approaching him last year- and I think with him and John (Hopkins) it is the strongest rider line-up that we have had since we joined MotoGP in 2003.´

Melandri will make his debut aboard the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR during the two-day test immediately after the conclusion of the 2008 season at Valencia in October.

The Italian rider will look to rebuild his confidence and form with his new team after a difficult time with current outfit Ducati. Melandri finished second in the World Championship in 2005 and in the top five in 2006 and 2007 on Honda machinery, before struggling to adapt to the Desmosedici GP8 this year. His contract for 2009 had been terminated by mutual consent.

Kawasaki will be the fourth manufacturer for whom Melandri has ridden in MotoGP, after Yamaha and the aforementioned Honda and Ducati rides.

Melandri´s move is an important one for the state of the MotoGP grid, being the first instance of a rider switching teams to be officially confirmed for 2009.
