whilst riding and overtaking a few slower bikes @ aprox 180 klm/h suddenly there was no throttle response ie acceleration just died, as bike slowed down a bit maybe barely 2 secs later throttle came back on. Felt like fuel stopped then back on again. Never happened before. What do you reckon the '99 fuel pump finally showing symptoms? needs cleaning? if so is it a big job, can a novice like myself do it or best left to the paid mechanics?

second question, I noticed at speeds of 70 klm/h no more no less only on 70 theres a repetative sound coming like retcha - retcha - retcha not that loud but can make it out thru helmet and wind noise, almost as if you got something stuck on the tyres. I reckon maybe front wheel bearings could I be on the right track? theyre still oem @58k.

Thx for any input, bit of a learning curve too for anyone not yet having come across these complaints.

Hi Volvi,

The upper fault does sound like the motor is starving for fuel, either the 99 cheesecake pump or the injectors need a clean out. There are filters in the injectors too, but for a sudden surge like that I would be looking at the fuel pump.

BTW, what was your tanl level. She wasnt getting low at all.

I'm running the 2000 model, and with the turbo buildi i will be ditching the stock fuel pump altogether because it wont pump through the stock injectors at 90psi.

Second one, could be wheel bearings, dragging brake disc, or we had a case of a copper bike developing a while that sounded like wheel bearings but turned out to be caused by an aftermarket front sprocket with no cush drive in it.

Good luck in your mission. Glad to see you breaking the mould down there in Bracksville and riding the thing.

Good advise Graham.

With the bike on the side stand see if you can rock the rear sprocket back and forth. If there's a bit of play it will be the cush drives.

Money well spent replacing those...

My advice on the fuel issue for what its worth. If you have never replaced the filter and had the 2 screens in the pump cleaned then penny to a pinch of shit they will be the problem. I have recently done mine (99) and was amazed at the gunk on the screens especially the fine one. It was almost blocked with a fine red paste - rust in the fuel. The symtoms you describe are the same as i had. It is a bit a a drama to do the clean and change the filter but do it or get it done. Mine runs perfect now.

Volvi,re the noise, how is your chain?A tight spot in the chain would give you that noise and feeling you describe and as far as the thing cutting out,its prolly the filters, but then it could have been a glitch in the ECU,has it only done it the once?
I would just keep riding it and see if it does it again, these ECUs can sometimes do strange shit. Phuck its the phantom!

Volvi

well chain seems fine tho will give it a good checkup this w/end. cutting out? just happened the once only, but my fuel filters have never been looked at in over 6 yrs so reckon its hi time, even tho have always been carefull to place quality fuel only.

Wouldn't make any difference Volvi.

Do you think and I are joking when we call the 99 the self saucing Busa.

The pump produces its own cheese???

I'm surprised it's lasted that long?

not as yet, i sorta left it all when I do everything on the bike ie change calipers, front forks, servicing etc.
