very carefully :-)
I use a small screwdriver (jewellers) to get under it,
lift a little at a time around the caps.
...or a razor blade, slowly
use your fingernails first to gantry them up slightly (it does hurt a bit) and then use a very small flat screwdriver to lift them totally off, this will ensure you don't ruin the buttons.
I use a razor blade.

Then buy yourself some nice black metal pro bolt items. Problem solvered.
Becareful not to damage the top of the triple tree as well because it marks easily. Trust me I found out the hard way.
superglue something to them, then use vegetable oil to disolve superglue... just be careful the chrome is of suffient grade to not be effected by glue
Thanks for the tips fellas will give them a try
Perhaps jimmy them up with the edge of a credit card or the like? Mine have little corrosion bubbles on them so it's obviously some form of real chrome. I might rub a little wax into them. Then I had better change my user name to "fusspot"
Pincers.... just grab em and yank em out. it'll take you 2 seconds and no damage.
