Full Version: Flat tyre

Got my first flat tyre in six years since getting back into bikes. Took the Busa out for a quick spin yesterday Kenilworth to Malaney. Coming back about 10KM from home I felt the bike moving around a bit on the Bruce Hwy and thought it was just the wind. Turned off the Hwy into Pomona and the bike was really heavy trying to take the corner. Pulled over a found I had a rear flat. Lucky I had just taken the CO2 canistors and plug kit off my other bike a week ago and put under the hump with the tool kit. Had a good look around the tyre and found a small bit of metal swarf about 6mm long and thought this was it. Put a plug in the tyre a this spot and pumped the tyre up with one of the CO2 canistors only to find that the hole was in another spot. So jammed another plug into the tyre. topped the tyre up with another CO2 canistor and rode home after the15 mins stop.
Went home and removed the rear wheel and took it to my local bike tyre supplier Tyres For Bikes at Cooroy. I am replacing the half worn Dunlop Qualifier with a Mich Road 3.

Got the 2nd michy road three on mine.Good mileage,great in wet or dry.11 thou out of my first one.
I better get a tyre repair kit. what does the forum suggest? Should I get the one with the regulator, the tap? I am a dinosaur when it comes to these products.

That is what you need. Just add a small pair of side cutters to help pull out a nail or what ever may be still stuck in the tyre out. With the cord type plug you use the glue more for a lubricant to help push the plug into the tyre, I just use spit on mine with no problems.
I think at the speed limit(110km/h) the plugged tyre would be ok to run. I just wouldn't trust it doing high speed around a sweeping bend.
I have been been using these cord type plugs for years on 4WD's and never had one fail. Even had six jammed side by side to fill a larger hole.

If you do contact Mono regarding puncture repair kits, he has both the wick type and the rubber mushroom head type. He also stocks tiny little 12v compressors . Most of the guys on our big trip had either repair kit and a compressor and never used them once. You don't need to carry air canisters that way.
