personally I think Facebook is a load of crap!!!
What is heralded to be the innovation of social interaction should not even be afforded a footnote in our social development. We have sacrificed quality for quantity and reduced the consequence and responsibility to near zero as a result.
Communicating with someone requires a whole range of aspects. We use volume, tone, sight, sound, tactile sensations and emotion to try to carry our thoughts to other people. The remove of any of these aspects reduces the quality of our communication which increases the chance of misunderstandings. Our words alone are not significant enough to truly portray what we really want to say but they are given a high importance due to shared language.
Now with facebook we are reduced to sight only (with some sound from added clips, soundtracks, etc.) and the level of our academic skills. As the definition and use of each word is highly arguable (that's all Lawyers really do) and we have no other input as to what the other person is trying to communicate it is no wonder there are many "likes" or "dislikes" for each comment. The system relies on a bully principle using your number of "friends" to sway your comments not actually logical understanding.
The removal of personal responsibility and consequence results in people "saying" things they wouldn't if in a face to face conversation. This creates a Claytons syndrome (having the balls to say/do something you normally wouldn't) which fuels instant responses and ignites emotions.
And finally to add to all this crap is the removal of time.. in a normal conversation topics flow through time and anything said/done is remembered and usually referred to in it's whole if trying to return to that topic. While the timeless facebook hold the history of every topic. This history can be manipulated by the instigator and snippets taken out of context.
People now spend their lives sitting in front of a screen all alone at night thinking they are being social and interactive. The value of a real friend has been reduced to an on/off cyber button. Personal self worth is degraded to the number of "friends" and "hits" gotten. Interests have changed from invested hobbies to 5 second google search and like buttons. Private personal are no longer worked out behind closed doors but aired to the world and outcomes decided by how got he most "likes".
For me this is all very sad and indicates a terrible social road being traveled. Communication should not be a free instant media with no consequence, it should be a meaningful experience that costs the sender something so that the receiver can appreciate how much was invested (no I don;t mean charging for facebook posts but it will happen one day).
theres my rant for the day LOL
