personally I think Facebook is a load of crap!!!
What is heralded to be the innovation of social interaction should not even be afforded a footnote in our social development. We have sacrificed quality for quantity and reduced the consequence and responsibility to near zero as a result.

Communicating with someone requires a whole range of aspects. We use volume, tone, sight, sound, tactile sensations and emotion to try to carry our thoughts to other people. The remove of any of these aspects reduces the quality of our communication which increases the chance of misunderstandings. Our words alone are not significant enough to truly portray what we really want to say but they are given a high importance due to shared language.

Now with facebook we are reduced to sight only (with some sound from added clips, soundtracks, etc.) and the level of our academic skills. As the definition and use of each word is highly arguable (that's all Lawyers really do) and we have no other input as to what the other person is trying to communicate it is no wonder there are many "likes" or "dislikes" for each comment. The system relies on a bully principle using your number of "friends" to sway your comments not actually logical understanding.
The removal of personal responsibility and consequence results in people "saying" things they wouldn't if in a face to face conversation. This creates a Claytons syndrome (having the balls to say/do something you normally wouldn't) which fuels instant responses and ignites emotions.
And finally to add to all this crap is the removal of time.. in a normal conversation topics flow through time and anything said/done is remembered and usually referred to in it's whole if trying to return to that topic. While the timeless facebook hold the history of every topic. This history can be manipulated by the instigator and snippets taken out of context.

People now spend their lives sitting in front of a screen all alone at night thinking they are being social and interactive. The value of a real friend has been reduced to an on/off cyber button. Personal self worth is degraded to the number of "friends" and "hits" gotten. Interests have changed from invested hobbies to 5 second google search and like buttons. Private personal are no longer worked out behind closed doors but aired to the world and outcomes decided by how got he most "likes".

For me this is all very sad and indicates a terrible social road being traveled. Communication should not be a free instant media with no consequence, it should be a meaningful experience that costs the sender something so that the receiver can appreciate how much was invested (no I don;t mean charging for facebook posts but it will happen one day).

theres my rant for the day LOL
whooa! there big fella!
Im glad you got that off your chest, it looked painfullCoolsmiley
Its good to see someone has a viable opinionClap
And isnt afraid to express it. If we as a society had done this earlyer
we may have a society that we could be proud of insyead of this half baked, yellow backed, self centered entitled thing we have!
I love Aus, but the way we are going it wont be here for long!
I've heard they've recently discovered a "new social medium", even better than Facebook, that will allow children to interact, see each other, hear each other and develop a better understanding about the world around them.

It's called "outside"
Yeah but most of that can apply to Forums too!
:-)
It's all in how you use it.
Some people are addicted to Forums, Facebook whatever.

For me Facebook is great to keep up to date with family everywhere. You just can't get that from a forum, well you could but it would take a lot of effort.
And it's a great way to keep up to date with groups and places of interest, subscribe and you're done.

Facebook is full of trivia but so are forums.

If it's used correctly it's fine.

And today's youth hardly use Facebook from what I have heard. It's us oldies who are on it now. They have moved on...:-)

A lot of what you say is true though.

And re Likes don't forget this forum has a LIKE button too and I see it's been used in this thread too.
:-)
I like the concept of facebook but not the current usage.. if that makes any sense??

As for keeping in contact with family and friend over seas and intrastate I use skype, that way I can get to see them too..

while forums are also a social media they generally tend to have a focused topic (here it's bikes, specifically busas) with the occasional rant about a left field topic like mine LOL

I guess facebook is the new religion... started as a great way to ground ourselves and create a utopian society but ended up abused and ugly

and from what I see of my 16 yo son, facebook is a 95% usage tool.. specially when he can use facebook with NO credit on his mobile. Trying him to get credit on his phone so he can call/txt is now impossible
Couldn't agree more Batty, absolutely spot on.
What's wrong with contacting by Skype, email or telephone?

Post of the year right here, well done.

Social media cant be social over a keyboard..
I agree batty I hate FB don't like the computer than much either
that why my post count is low after all these years
Im old school like seeing & talking to people in person or by phone
car clubs in the past use to have meetings once a month to talk about things & outings
my wife join FB recently & tries to tell me what some of my friends are doing BUT I DON,T FRIGGIN CARE
wayne
I did hear somthing the other day and it sounds a bit out there!
Apparently Aust. Post do this thing called a letter and it has a stamp thingny! A here I thought it was just for getting bike parts from overseas!!!Lol2
I read recently an 'eggspurt' comment that reckoned Facebook will be done within 4 to 5 years. Can't come soon enough, hopefully 'Twatter' will be done by then too.
I deleted all my friends on the weekend and only kept a few with association to cars. Kept the cars groups etc but just got sick of reading who was eating what and peoples reliance on wine to get them through the day. Sad sad people.

Waste a lot of time on there over the last 5 years and decided id rather spend more time with the family.

Tony, you have spent a lot of time and effort writing about this crap. It is a such a waste of effort on this garbage spying tool for the governments and marketing bullshit.
Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and whatever else.
Hate them all.
I can understand family and friends keeping in contact from afar, but cannot stand all the useless drivel people put on there.

I don't care what they are wearing.
I don't care where they are hanging.
I don't care what they are eating.
I don't care how many times they are pooping.

I'll stick to this and a few other bike forums, that'll do me.Coolsmiley
