Has anyone done the clutch fluid mod? Namely early Busa owners noticed how the fluid gets dirty early (dark window in reservoir). And some have created a mod using a plastic milk bottle top with a hole to cover the slave piston, thereby stopping gunk thrown on it from front sprocket which finally contaminates the clutch fluid.

Anyone done it? Are you interested? Perhaps we can do a collective workshop and do it on a few bikes? Any takers?, i have instructions.

Here are some links re the subject.

Happy to be apart of this. When I asked a suzuki dealer, he said it was because of the high number of repetative full stroke lever pulls, as opposed to lighter use on the brake lever.

After changing it twice, I'm happy to give anything a go to keep it clear, and from the US sites, it seems to do the trick.

Is the bottle cap concealed behind the cover or does it show. It would look really shithouse if you could see it.

If anyone does this before me, let us know how with some pics.

Cheers, Phil. Riding not gettin' dirty.

Worthwhile Phil? Did he use a coke lid or something a little better?

No big deal really,so what if its dirty If it was the brake fluid, then i would be concerned.I changed mine recently, thinking it might make the clutch a bit more progressive....waist of time ,its still shit!

busababy

i agree with rod, waste of time to even worry about it.... and if you are, paint out the glass window....

When the grit and gunge from chain and sprocket also scores the bore of the slave cylinder causing it to sieze or leak ................paint it out to

My bike is 3 years old and it hasn't been a problam yet!

To quote you Rocket "clutch a bit more progressive "
Problem could be that it's a bit hard to get a nice smooth clutch operation when the clutch slave piston is trying to "Glide" up and down it's bore along with three years accumalation of chain gunk. Just a guess I guess

Rocket: One look at your chain would tell me if you're going to have a prob in this area in the near future

My clutch slave cylinder seal FAILED due to the exact reasons detailed by Faster Faster 1 The ingress of dirt past the seals is impossible to stop unless you take steps to modify the situation And blokes wonder why their fluid goes black ?

Throwdown

There's a bike site called something like AZ tech, where the bloke has put a picture guide and excellent description of this mod. He was also machining a part for it, that looked much nicer than a milk bottle top.

I ignore it, keep the chain clean and change the fluid once a year, but that's because this guy didn't get back to me. Maybe someone here can copy the design and sell them.

To busy to find link, but I will later.

Throwdown

Oh, yeah! This is one of the things I'm annoyed at Suzuki for. In all this time they couldn't cough up for a solution that a milk bottle top can solve. Cra customer relations, just like the melting fans and cracked sub-frames.

busababy

if it becomes a problem, you would have more than likely done over 40,000 kays and that's more than a lifetime for most bike riders, but either way, a slave cylinder overhaul is not the end of the world even if you have to replace the whole unit...
preventative maintenance is not always the cheaper route.... despite of what some backyard tinkerers will try and sell you, but if you are gunna lose sleep over it, just do it anyway
not riding, not doing, just latteing.....

FF the reason the clutch is not progressive is more to do with the suzuki back limiting clutch, than the piston jamming up i think!

Tend to agree with BB re this not being such a big deal if
you only have one failure every 40,000 or so. What really annoyed me was the seal failed suddenly at 30,000 just after I took off for a big ride spoiled the whole day:">

If you know how to ride without a clutch you can limp home but it's totally preventable if you're not a fan of inconvenience.
