Was there any changes between the gearbox on the 2000 model and that of the 2001 model?

My 01 had a fantastic gearbox, very precise for selecting gears, this 00 I have just bought however doesn't seem anywhere near as good.

I'm really puzzled in some ways, because the two bikes were built only a month apart from each other,

Perhaps it's the oil being used? ---------------------------------

My 99 can be quite clunky - I thought that the really good feeling gearbox was the exception with the bus, not the norm...

bigshow

probably more of an indication of wear...

This one has 25,000 less kilometres on it than the 01 did, it's just hit 18,000km

dang, maybe the dead busa was a really good one, apart from the curse that is.... ---------------------------------

Hows the chain adjustment?I have a 00 model with 62.000kays now and ive found it better with the chain more on the looser side than the tight side,it just seems to shift a bit smoother.

nothing to be puzzled about, Suzuki revamped the tranny box from the 01, not sure exactly when tho. The previous are a bit clunky and more positive shifting required. I find that the rougher you treat it the better overall. There you have it, no mystery.

Throwdown

Suzuki revamped the gearbox because there were a few reports (U.S only as far as I can see), of guys wrecking their starter clutches when they started the bike in first gear and released the button before the engine fired (kick back).

Apparently, '99s and '00s can upgrade as it's all plug in and play. Don't let go of that button until the right moment I would have thought!

Ahhh, no probs

That's that sorted then, given my 00 is complianced 9/00 and my 01 was complianced 10/00 then I guess that helps narrow down when the change was made ---------------------------------

Throwdown, what would I need to source though in order to fix this problem? Is it the entire gearbox? ---------------------------------

Wearlej: The upgrade was the '03. Apparently a upgrade kit will cost around $1200.

I am going to get the Yuasa YTZ 14S battery from the Honda ST 1300, (about $300), and put it on a battery tender ($70ish) each night once home. I don't have the know how to be mucking about with the gearbox. The battery is bigger, but will fit under the seat and is good for extra crank and if fitting accessories.

Her are some fixes copied from elsewhere.

1) ''The main difference in the 03 set-up is that the main gear driven by the starter is now a multi-piece unit that allows a little kickback, whereas the previous piece was solid steel and had no give. The starter shaft is a little longer and the cover is a little bit deeper.

You do not have to change every single piece if your starter is still working and you just want to upgrade. The starter clutch on the end of the crank and the middle idler gear are no different than the previous models".

2) "Yank old cover off, undo two bolts
Pull two gears, install two new ones, ....reverse of removal...done.

Easy, about 40 minutes of your time to do it right without rushing anything".

3) "The cheapest route is to get one of the Schintz inserts that's pressed over the socket that holds the pin for the middle idler gear. It'll keep the pin from shearing out the socket and messing up the case".

4) "Yes, that mod was to slot the mounting holes on the starter and move the starter assy into the motor slightly to get more gear engagement. I did this to mine at about 4000 miles and now have about 12000 on it. When it was apart, you could see that there wasn't full engagement, and that mod help achieve full spline engagement.

Also, the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do it to NEVER LET OFF ON THE STARTER BUTTON UNTIL YOU KNOW FOR SURE THAT THE ENGINE HAS STARTED. If you do this, then there will be no kickback UNLESS your batter is totally wasted".

Let us know how it goes.

PS: 1 to 4 are not related. They are from four different guys. My battery solution can count as 5).

Throwdown

Just spoke to my mate in London who has had gear box problems and found it to be a buggered second gear - big money to fix.

I asked him how he rides off from a stand still (say launching from the traffic lights), and he tells me that he wellies it up to high revs (forgot how many) before switching up to second.

Now, the best advice I was given was to change into second early (I practically do it straight away now). If there is a dodgy gear on a motorbike gearbox it'll be second, and the busa has a dodgy second gear pre '03 (I think).

I love my gear box, you just need to get to know it.

as of late... not sure if its me being slack or not, but I seem to miss when I try to slip in to 6th for cruising on the hwy !! I do the change & it sits in between 5th & 6th... could it be the oil thats now used in her ??
*she was serviced not long ago as well

Chain tension.

maybe time for a new chain then ay
