Hi everyone,
I am looking at buying a used 'busa. What is a 1999 model in poor- fair condition with 80,000 k's on the clock worth? I'm in Australia.
The prices people ask seem to be way off what Redbook says.

Also depends on the state you are buying from. Where are you looking & what mods does it have or is it stock?
poor around 8k, fair 8.5-10k, nevermind redbook its what ppl will pay and what seller is prepared to part for. also depends how much extras on bike.

It has been down the road a few times and the front fairings have been bodgied up. The front brakes need work (maybe new discs), the chain was DRY!!! which says to me that the owner hasn't looked after it. The headstock needs looking at. It will need new tyres soon. It doesn't sound so good when idling cold but sounds fine when going and it goes OK. I haven't ridden a Hayabusa before but it goes well, about as much stick as a ZX12R.
In my experience when you buy a bike the problems you see when you initially look at it are only the tip of the iceberg.
It has D&D end cans, stock otherwise.
It's in country NSW near Canberra.

If its as banged up as you say then leave it there. Why buy someone elses problems.

Asking $12000 but guess he or Ziggy would haggle.

The reason I am considering this bike is my budget doesn't stretch that far. I could fix it up at my leisure, as long as it goes, is reliable and I can have some fun on it in the meantime. I have the means and ability to fix!! :-)
How many K's would a 'busa motor/box do before needing a rebuild, assuming it was religiously flogged? And...., (sorry for all the questions) Are they good for 200,000 if looked after, with regular synthetic oil changes?

There is a bit of clutch rattle std,should change as you use the clutch...but watch out on the 99 that the timing chain tensioner has a hydraulic line coming from the front right oil gallery , this is a needed upgrade from the original spring/ratchet only tensioner,if it rattles from the timing chain area don't even ride it as you maybe blamed if it chooses that moment for the timing chain to skip teeth (you could use this to bargain a lower sale price and fix before use ;) )
Mate look at Simmo's Bike, one of the few very nicely maintained bikes and its wont cost you a arm and leg. - (dont know what you wanna spend - he has it on ebay)
I wouldnt recommend you buying any thing that needs more then just new rear tyres...
id be reluctant to get an unlooked after bike, as you said cud just be the tip of the iceberg, unless of course it was so damned cheap it wouldnt matter. But chances are theres plenty really good looked after ones anywhere between 8.5-10 if thats within your budget. just a matter of being patient and waiting for the right one to come up.
busa engines are supposedly 'bullet proof' or at least long lasting. a good engine I reckon if looked after can do 400 before a rebuild, otherwise on average 250-350.

The redbook prices dived when the new K8 model was released. Until then the price had been stable at around $10 to $12 thousand.
If the bike has a good donk and suspension and a straight frame you could pay about $6,500 and fix all the damage for a couple of thousand extra.
I just sold one with 115,000 Ks on it and it was running beautifully.
OR you could buy a good one for about 9 or 10 thou if you shop around.
