Clutch issue - BennyT - 02-10-2009

the clutch on my 02 busa is dying on me and im wondering if its actually because of something else as it went from fine to practically nothing in 2 days

i had a quick look when the bike was on the rear stand the last time and i cant tell how much oil is in the engine. the little indicator looked kinda clear but ive noticed that if the oil is good, its really hard to see it anyway.

is it possible that the clutch isnt working cos theres no or little oil?
i dont really want to do an oil change if its not going to fix it cos thatll be a waste of money (will need new oil if changing the clutch anyway)

any help/ideas are appreciated

Did you check the oil with the bike upright? (ie: Off the stands?) It's a pain, but you need to do it that way. I put a level on the seat and stand her upright while I'm checking.

Low oil will definitely effect clutch operation... as will crap oil. You'll hear more from those more technically inclined over the next few days I'm sure. How many k's on the bike?

Regards... Rob (Astro)

bikes done about 47 000 or so
not sure on the service history below 40 000 tho but since then ive done a service
just realised then that its prbly due for a service too :P

in terms of oil, whats a good one to use?
i think i used motul the last time

RE: Clutch issue - Maj - 02-10-2009

What do you mean by dying ?? slipping in high gear or difficulty selecting gears ?? or something else ?
Has it had the BTL mod ??

RE: Clutch issue - BennyT - 03-10-2009

it hasnt had any mods as far as i know

basically when taking off, it slips for ages before finally clunking into gear (sometimes causing it to stall if im not quick)
also when im cruising then twist the throttle a bit, it slips for a bit before accelerating normally

Yow-eeee!

Quick remove your oil filler cap. Have a sniff around the orifice. Does it smell like burnt clutch plates? Or burning brakes? Stuffed clutch plates have a distinctive smell. If it smells suss, (and by your symptoms it sounds like its suss); take bike off to be inspected and repaired!

If you keep riding it as described and the plates are slipping - they'll get worse, far worse! Slipping plates = lots of heat, enough in fact to melt your plates and hub and to ruin your steel plates.

Here's some happy snaps from a slipping Busa clutch I recently overhauled, replacing the BTL with a non-BTL MTC hub.

On dismantling, here's the sight that greeted me...

There was melted aluminium all through the engine including the oil jets! Luckily for the owner he'd stopped riding when he did. It could have destroyed the engine.

HA Ha , looks familiar... mine ended up as little aluminium balls in the sump, cost me a crankshaft when the oil pickup blocked with clutch parts.
this all happened in one run on the salt in 06, thought i was wheelspinning and took too long to recognise what that red light on the dash was......

RE: Clutch issue - BennyT - 03-10-2009

ooo crap
hmm i think ill not be riding the bike until this gets sorted then :)

cheers camel.
pulling the clutch off the bike is a bit beyond my mechanical knowledge of the bike atm so i might just get it done at the shop

RE: Clutch issue - BUSGO - 04-10-2009

Thanks for the excellent post there camel.

RE: Clutch issue - Volvi - 04-10-2009

opening the clutch basket doesnt lose much if any oil if leaned over on its side stand. The plates will definately have to be looked at and only replace with OEM plates. sometimes whole oem kits are for sale at a lot less then one would pay in the shops. but be sure theyre oem. any sign of slipping is the clutch. of course before anything else when bike is on level surface check the oil level in window, get someone to hold bike up whilst you check. if theres no oil visible, then possibly thats why its slipping. either way make sure theres correct level. if there is and still slipping, the plates have to be looked at whether by yourself or a mechanic.

RE: Clutch issue - BennyT - 04-10-2009

just did an oil change (which is needed badly anyway)
i noticed that if the engine is revved a bit while on the rear stand in neutral, the rear wheel turns
is this normal? i cant remember if it did it before

RE: Clutch issue - Legend - 04-10-2009

It'll do that sometimes......sounds like your getting parinoid(sp) btw changing the oil wont help if the clutch is rooted, better get it checked!

RE: Clutch issue - spamanglenn - 04-10-2009

Personally i prefer to root a crutch instead of a clutch, lol. On the rear stand my bike always turns the back wheel in nuetral when its cold, stops when it warms up.

Every bike that I've ever owned with a centre stand has done that at startup, which is why I have always engaged the clutch before starting, even on bikes that don't require it.
As the other guys have said, that is nothing to worry about but a slipping clutch when warm is.

RE: Clutch issue - BennyT - 04-10-2009

hmm righto.
well im gonna see how it goes now. i reckon the clutch may have been slipping due to not enough oil
