Bearing and steering head question - Dan85 - 11-05-2010 Ok I'm putting my gen2 front end on my 99 frame or attempting to. A few questions(yes again I know I'm a pain) is there a difference between gen1 and gen2 steerng head bearings? My issue is that my steering stem appears to be not long enough to get the nut and lock nut on which leads me to believe there is a height difference in the bearings or in the steering head. Or perhaps I just need to apply more persuation to the outer races toget them into the bearing slot on the stearing head? Anyone know what the case is? RE: Bearing and steering head question - BLACKZOOK - 11-05-2010 Dan call Leonard he has done this conversion already. RE: Bearing and steering head question - simmo - 11-05-2010 The gen 2 frame is 170cm at the steering head, measure yours it maybe just the center bolt too short if your lucky I had my gen 1 out years ago and it just popped back onto place RE: Bearing and steering head question - Dan85 - 11-05-2010 Thanks Bruce I'll ask him what's the go. Simmo cheers mate I'll go measure RE: Bearing and steering head question - Dan85 - 12-05-2010 Simmo I assume you meant 170mm at the steering head? The gen1 steering head is slightly bigger at 180mm top to bottom. Am I able to just change the steering stem or do I need to replace the steering stem and lower clamp with gen1 units? I still have to get onto Leonard see what he says. RE: Bearing and steering head question - simmo - 12-05-2010 yep 170mm sorry never could read metric ![]() Looks like a lot more changes we don't know about, the steerng head is a bit steeper on the Gen 2 ![]() RE: Bearing and steering head question - Dan85 - 12-05-2010 Yeah there's certainly more difference than I expected. Thanks for measuring simmo. RE: Bearing and steering head question - simmo - 13-05-2010 (12-05-2010, 08:58pm)Dan85 Wrote: Yeah there's certainly more difference than I expected.
