Head shakes?? - Champs - 12-05-2010

I was riding along casually on a straight bit of the Bells Line Road resting my left hand, so riding one handed, at about 80 k's when the front hit a bitumen bubble in the middle of the road. The front of the bike had a fit and went into the shakes. I was able to grab the LHS bar and settle it down while also saying out loud something like "What the F!!! was that !?!". I went back to the spot and all that was there was the bitumen bubble.

Has anyone had a similar experience? I was so confident in the front end stability up to then and it seemed very out of character. I have never had anythinf before or since. I had been riding for about 5-6 hours at that point but nothing too hard.

Any similar experiences?

Similar experiences, yes. "The dreaded death wobbles". Some say, they have almost killed as many bikers as drunk women drivers and Alcoholic High Court Judges that drink & drive that only live to 60 !

Similar, but on an R1. Open back road, in a hurry to get home, didn't see a pothole.
The front shook like a bastard, scared the bejeesus outta me, had sore wrists for a week.
I went and bought a steering damper before I rode it again.

I'd never have thought it'd happen on a Busa, very planted on the road!!

Cheers Biker

My steering dampner has saved me three times, I wouldn't ride the busa without it. It is fine, you don't even know it is there until you need it, and then you REALLY need it. If you are worried, get it checked next time you have a service, or congratulate yourself that it just did exactly what it was supposed to do.

My Gen1 used to do it when the front wheel was skipping the road say going over a crest, I put heaver oil in it, but it still did it a bit anyway Biker

+1 to what Heidi is saying. If you take your dampner off and check the body for oil, open the little philip's head screw and check for oil. Many Busas don't have sufficient oil in them to work correctly.

Cheers

4 out of 4 OEM Busa steering dampers work like a bucket of cow shi*.
Sure, you can check the oil, but make sure you drain it all out & fill it up with 90 weight gearbox oil. Then the bucket of cowshi* might not be so slopy.CoolsmileyWtf

engine oil maybe but 90 weight is too heavy slows down the steering too much

I refilled mine with 20/50 never had a problem

RE: Head shakes?? - CeeJay07 - 13-05-2010

Maybe your bike has the onset of Parkinsons Syndrome.....my old nan got that and she used to shake like a dog shitting razor blades.

RE: Head shakes?? - kevin - 13-05-2010

do you think the gen2 needs it 2 had lots of rear wheel slap

RE: Head shakes?? - Madmax - 13-05-2010

15 weight fork oil is about right. I tried 90 weight and she handled like a London Bus.

RE: Head shakes?? - kevin - 13-05-2010

would you do it on a new bike or only if it shakie

RE: Head shakes?? - Champs - 13-05-2010

Only did it once but since then I make sure I am two handed when some rough stuff comes along. I thought I heard that the gen II was some sort of "smart" damper rather than just oil based?

Was I hearing things?
