Strange flat tyre - DAVE01 - 20-08-2011
Hi
Last weekend I went for a 400k ride and when I got home I oiled the chain+ washed the bike and put it away but Monday morning I noticed it had a flat rear tyre so I pumped it up and went all around the tyre and valve but could not find a leak.
Today [week later] I did about 200k on it and every thing is ok.
I'm just wondering do these soft tyres [pure] loose their seal on rough roads/pot holes perhaps ?

How flat was flat? I mean was it pancake flat or just soft.

Had the bead been broken when you noticed it flat?
Did you check the valve stem also? is it rubber?
Check the wheel for roundness as well as buckles.

It may have just been the Valve Insert some times they leak and then when you pump the tyre back up it's enough to make it seal again, if you want check the valve insert with a bit if spit as it will soon tell you if it's got a small leak.
As Legend has mentioned go over everything and if you still can't find anything make up a weak batch of detergent & water and put it in a spray bottle and slowly go around and spray the tyre, rim, tyre bead & valve stem etc this will pick up the smallest of leaks pretty quick..

All the above and look over the tire for wire or nail, sometimes they can seal well enough till you use it ,

Hey Dave glad to hear that it's all OK and I would probably say it was the valve insert as I mentioned before, when you pull a valve insert out they have a small rubber seal a little bit like an o'ring except flat sometimes these get pinched and leak and all it takes to get everything to re-seal again is blow the tyre up again. You can minimise any leak here by making sure the valve cap is nice and thight or take the valve insert out and just check the rubber seal make sure it's good otherwise if the tyre is staying up then maybe change the valve out next time you put new tyres on.
So hopefully that's all it was.

I had to go to the local tyre shop today and I mentioned to him what had happened ,he said when we get cold snaps overnight he often gets people coming in thinking they have flat tyres but it is only the valve venting and with the cold weather the spring in the valve gets stuck, so when I pumped up they tyre again I probably freed up the valve spring.
Just thought I'd pass it on
