side reflectors removal = liabilty? - Monyx - 10-08-2007 The recent focus on bike safety in the SMH Drive section had me pondering the age-old preference for aesthetics over safety, especially concerning side reflectors. Post a bike photo taken with flash and invariably it's met with howls of "ditch teh the reflectors you're blinding me!". They're required by ADR so removal renders a bike unroadworthy which I guess could have implications if involved in accident w/o them. In practice I wonder how deeply insurance or authorites dig, in terms of inspection of accident vehicles? I imagine most performance bikes are rendered technically unroadworthy what with TRE, after-market ECU, exhaust etc. Going back few years ago I recall friend of friend desperately trying to chang wheels/tyres and his small sports steering on car he had accident in at the smash repairers, thinking aboiut his insurance policy. Its a fact of modern life. Just insure through the companies that have a proven track record for sensible payout. Cheap will always be cheap for a reason. Make sure your expensive stuff is listed. Wheels and exhaust in particular. In the event of a write off, take spanners down to the recovery agent and el strippo. Everything good that you can carry or get salvage rights. An engine is worth a lot. Might even inspire a project.
