Hi Guys,
I have just sold my 07 R1 (6000 ks) and bought an 06 Busa (Black/Silver with 18000ks). Apart from the obvious differences between the two bikes i have been wondering about a couple of things that i hope you can help me with.

Front Brakes - The front brakes feel really spongey compared to the R1. Is this just a trait of the bike that i need to get used to or is there something i should look at? The front pads seem to have plenty left on them....

Backfire - The bike seems to backfire a fair bit when buttoning off quickly after giving it a squirt (mainly in second) Took it for a blast today and they were getting pretty loud when off the throttle. Can this do damage and is this something i need too get fixed. Seems its running rich or something.

Throttle Play - There seems to be a little bit of play in the throttle before the power comes on. Can someone tell me an easy fix for this one.

You will find all your answers in the discussions below.
In short.
Question 1. Your brakes may just need bleeding. The busa front brake calipers are not easy to do right and often get left with a bit of air in the line. The action at the lever should be fairly firm but not soft.
Others will tell you to do major upgrades here but for general road riding the stock brakes work when they have to. ( honestly )

Question 2. The backfiring is usually only present when after market cans are fitted and the device in the exhaust system called a PAIR valve fires air into the exhaust to burn of the excess fuel. This can be fixed by blocking the air feeder hose from the airbox to the PAIR valve located near the headers.

Question 3. Throttle free play is adjusted the same as for nearly every other bike. 1 to 3 mm is the norm. Some people like a bit and others don't. If you don't have any or if you have too much, be prepared to get jerked around.

Greetings and welcome!

An interesting move from the R1 to the Busa - was there a reason?? Not that I disagree with the move, of course!

In any case can you supply any further info about the bike - IE - what mods are done or if it's stock? It will help the tech boffins on here to give you a better answer!

My first busa was stolen, so I went to an R1 for a year. Personally, it wasn't the bike for me and I couldn't wait to get back to the bus.

I noticed the real difference between an R1 brakes and the busa. Admittedly, mine was an early gen (2000 from memory), and I know they fussed around with the brakes in later years, but I found the R1 brakes were ON or OFF with not much in between. You can see the differences, one is more a tracky, the other more tourer (although a lot of do track days AND tour on the damn things).

I found braided brake lines made a difference to my busa, others have gone for major and expensive upgrades. Ride it for a bit, keeping in mind that is a completely different beast and then decide what to spend your money on. Give them a bleed, that's a nice cheap start.

Busgo is on the money about the backfiring, I bet you have aftermarket pipes. I got rid of my spectacular backfiring issue (WAY cool at night) by getting it re-dynoed. I was torn, the backfiring with associated flames was nearly cool enough to keep.

re brakes, I agree with Busgo and Heidi. Unless you want to option up start with the simplest and cheapest first.

Ive got stock standard brakes on my K7. when I changed from std pads to HH Sintered ( i think whihc cost $15 more ) I almost got thrown over the handle bars the difference was so big.

So Id go;

1. Bleed the lines Yours is 06 and maybe the fluid has not been changed (should be every 2 yrs). Cost $10.

2. New Pads ( wait until your are worn unless they are dangerously bad) Cost ($15 above normal replacement cost).

3. Braided lines. Cost $app 150 (I think as ive not done it).

4. Aftermarket brakes (disks etc ) $$$.

Thanks for the advice guys. The bike is stock standard (no pipes nothing), thats why i bought it. A nice blank canvas for me to play with. I will start with bleeding the brakes and see how i go from there. I am actually loving the backfiring at the moment. As long as it wont do any damage then i am happy with it.

The move from the R1 was because i want to do some more touring plus i will be using it as a commuter for work. I havent really noticed a lot of power difference between the two bikes except that the R1 always wanted to stand on its rear and the busa takes a bit more to get it up. The smoothness of the power is what i am loving the most, give it a litttle bit of wrist and away you go. The R1 is an amazing bike dont get me wrong but for what i want a bike for at the moment the busa has me sold.....
