PI cub day discussion- no pics
#1
Guys, I have made a separate topic to post pics so that we can have some discussion about the day here without having to download large pics every time.

So please don't post pics here, just discussion. Thanks.

Post your pics at this thread here in member photos.

As for the day it turned out great...good weather, great riding. There was one mishap, but I won't spill the beans on it, I'll leave that to the person concerned to fill you in if they feel like it...but don't worry, no serious injury.

Luc, I didn't see you at all in the last three sessions...were you out there?

day...
I was defintely out there in the last 3 sessions Scott, usually wait a couple of mins and let the pranksters sort themselves out to get some clear track.

I was having a ding dong battle with a sbk school rider (I think?) on a silver R1 after lunch for about 5 or 6 laps I'd go under brakes into turn 1, he'd ride around the outside of southern, I'd go under brakes into honda, he'd go outside at siberia, I'd jam it down the inside at MG then the fuker would ride around the outside again at turn 12!! We were doing around 1:52's...apparently there's good footage of it from pit roof.

I ended up setting a new best in the final session, a VFR400 was giving me the absolute shits riding around the outside of me every freakin where! I ripped a couple of 1:51's and burned the annoying prick ...the times aren't anything particularly special, but that's what it's all about, having a bit of fun and gradually improving
Without doubt I reckon 1:48 is doable on the busa the way it is...how the hell Krusty did a 1:46 on stock tyres?? The guy is just good

Save of the day goes to Greg's mate Bob with the YZF750, I didn't see him lose the front in turn 12, but it was pretty hard to miss his trip thru the gravel at mega speed He did very well to save it...

Smokin Joe did a couple of 1:58's on his 1000 late in the day, very good considering he'd never seen the Island before. Just quietly he's very impressed with the dyno run and associated remap performed by an unamed identity in the east...

Good stuff Luc. 1.51 on the Busa is excellent, as for 1.48, yeah it's doable, but I honestly believe that anything under 1.50 on ANY bike is a real achievement. As it is, 1.51 is only 5 seconds outside the best time I know of on a Busa, and that was done by one of Australia's best competition riders, as you well know.

I'm not really sure if I bettered my time. I was only actually timed for one session and I had an absolute shocker, had to use the escape route at Honda (first time in about 5 ride days) and it really put the wind up me for the rest of the session, couldn't get my gear selection right, lost my lines, just a shit session.

I did have a very good session first one after lunch where I followed David Nimmo for a few laps, pretty sure I would have bettered my time, but I wasn't timed, so I don't know for sure.

Not sure I met Smokin Joe, but I'm glad he is happy with the dyno tune from the unamed source in the east...as long as he is going faster, faster, that's the main thing.

Where did you get the digital images from? I've looked on the sdpics site but none there still??

My what the!! for the day was Phillis (I can only assume Rob) passing me on the gas near the end of Gardiner...fair enough he's a gun rider, but he was on a 999!!! What the indeed...

Scott / Wayne I had a mate there taking vids from various places on the circuit, if you get a mention I'll give you a copy...

Thanks Luc, that would be great. I meant to ask you...what areas of the track do you think you will be able to improve the most time?

I think you can always improve everywhere...
I've been on a racetrack 4 times (3 at the Island)... I'm still using only 4th gear around the entire track, shifting to 5th past the pits then back down to 4th for 1.
I figure if I could get at least 3rd out of southern, 2nd out of honda, 3rd thru siberia and 2nd out of MG that would have to be worth something?? I get creamed on the power out of honda and MG especially so I figure there's a stack of time there...Amusing comment, a mate was watching from Siberia, he says something like "what bloody gear is he using thru here...looks and sounds like he's making deleveries!! How do you respond to that?

Originally I was thinking of getting a thumb operated rear brake (bc my right leg is even more useless than the left ) but not having used a rear brake for over 3yrs I wouldn't know what to do with it if I had one...

This device is the solution to half my problems :

big $$$ but button operated gear shifts would be a dream!!

I'm just a hack when it come to track riding in all reality, but I wouldn't bother with the rear brake, I hardly use it at all on the track...and when I do I usually end up locking the rear wheel a bit because it is coming into Honda or MG and my rear is so light. Then you get that tap, tap, tap, tap when you start to lock the rear wheel and you just have to get off it.

You are right about the gears though, it won't hurt you as much on the Busa as some other bikes, but being able to get down into a lower gear for Honda and MG will certainly give you a lot more drive early out of those corners.

My recollection from riding the Busa was that for both Honda and MG second gear was ideal, though 3rd was reasonable if you didn't feel like changing down twice...but 4th...

4th out of southern on the busa is OK, but as you say, 3rd would be ideal.

And that's with stock gearing I'm talking about.

In the session prior to lunch you passed me somewhere along the straight. By the time we exited southern loop I was right up your ass and I enjoyed watching you leave a black line the whole way around turn 3 Super Corsas

Some of you guys should consider racing. Those numbers are impressive. You would all be mid field or better for the stars of tommorrow races. And they are on race bikes with slicks. Go the Busas.

Sorry guys, i missed this post and replied in the pinned topic (ond messed up the pics anyways). So here is an edited repeat.

"10+ bikes went down on the day... some of which we knew. I'll let them confess themselves (if theyre game).

I had a great day. My first ever track day, great weather, no incidents, 1:55 times, some pics and vid footage, a great lunch and fun fun fun.

FFG... dont believe everything you hear... i wasnt going to be overtaking you in any hurry. I was working hard to tail you.

Heres a few pics from the day."

So now the pics are in Bigshows link above.

The photo that shows some track in the background is sooooooooo sweet dude! the more I look at it, the more I get jizzed up wanting to rip the track and bust 3 min. I'm going to PI! That's all there is to it, I'm f*&^ing going!

ps. Slong, sorry to hear about the accident. That really makes me cringe. Sometimes the worst thing you can hear after a thing like that is advice (fuckn annoys the crap outta me when you stuff up and someone is there telling you what you shoulda done, especially after slicing off the T and almost killing some lady on the next fareway!) ... but dude, get on the Superbike School lesson 1 track day. It'll change your life! It's the only track day I've done, sure, but guys like ScottW have done it as well and I know he'll swear by it ... if he hasn't already.

pps. sorry about the rambling but seeing that bike on life support got me going. -385-
