General riding in traffic

Yes, lane splittings legal in Vic at speeds of ~5km or less if you pass the vehicle on the drivers side without going into the lane coming the other way. Stupidly, bike lanes are out of bounds. I reckon they should be able to be used at speeds of ~10km/k in peak times if priority is given to cyclists, (ie- common sense is used). Guess it's pretty hard to enforce such a law, (or should that be lore?).

As for bloody ph users on the roads, I occasionally stop if the driver does something stupid & I get the chance to tap on their window. I find that the best approach is to be pleasant & remind them it is illegal & as dangerous as drink driving. Sometimes they arc up, sometimes they take it in & consider my words. If you put people down, they'll get their back up & defy you just to shit you. Funnily enough, I seem to get less people arc up at me when I'm on my Busa as opposed to my Tenere.

If you see someone flick their ciggy butt or rubbish out of the window, well then you can do them. Simply go to www.epa.vic.gov.au/reporting & download their litter report/smoky vehicle form. I'm a smoker but I hate dodging ciggy butts & despise having to swim with them. Stuff it, it's my Earth too. And no, I don't report smoky vehicles as I usually feel too sorry for someone who appears to have little in the way of dollars. I just hope they get bloody thing, (often a Magna) fixed as soon as they can afford it.

Cheers

It is in Qld & Vic. Not sure about NSW. But there are other rules.
You can only lane split on the RIGHT side of the other vehicle, not on the left.
You can not cross the white line into the adjoining lane without indicating. (has to be enough room in the 1 lane to pass the other vehicle with out crossing)
You still can not go past the white stop line at the lights. There must be enough room to stop in front of or beside the lead car without going over the line.

I'm sure there are other rules but they are the main ones.

Had an encounter a little while ago at some lights where a driver took offense to my very safe lane splitting. About 10 k later he appeared next to us (mrs on back) doing some pretty silly swerving & fist raising so i let him go. Pulled up at next set of lights & sat behind him as i thought id upset him enough. lights turned green, he takes off & slammes on the brakes. Could have killed us both, lucky the car behind us was on the ball. Wants me to pull over - more fist waving.

Although i was seeing red & quite happy to dance at that point we kept going. Just not worth it.

In the end i think i had more satisfaction knowing i did the right thing & was the better person

I do know where he lives but !!

Clapi take satisfaction at the point the tin tops start frothing at the mouth like this guy did.no need too prove a point at that stage his missus will point it out too him when he comes home pissed off for what she will see as no reason. shit even in the car i get a laugh out the idiots racing through the traffic just to meet them again later down the road through intelligent lane swaps at the speed limit

In multi lane traffic - there are 2 sides to lane split - if you encounter a wanker like that again - sit back a little and when approaching the next set of lights make it appear that you will lane split on the right - he will obviously move to far right then come to a stop - you then manouver to the left - be sure that you have good balance by this stage as you will be required to lift your leg and snap his mirror off his car on the way past ....

If you didnt have your hand brake on the back of the bike , would you have had a little dance with this clown ? If you think about it -- how stupid is it for a cage driver to want to have a go at a bike rider , presuming you have all your bike gear on ( and keep it on ) any punch from idiot cage driver wont hurt - but a punch from bike rider will - especially if the have good gloves with reinforced knuckles :)
would certainly leave an imprint - something to think about the next time you see this clown - just remember wait for him to throw first punch as this will be witnessed by all the other drivers around you - then proceed to beat the shit out of him and claim self defense against a road rager..... he should then do time , provided you don't scream out anything stupid like im going to kill you ... :)

Yeah Louie...know where you are coming from....problem is all these idiots just bring more heat down on the rest of us...for instance today I'm stopped on the Monash "freeway" inbound in peak hour & what do I see ? some cammo dacked kiddie/toddler on a Gixxer something or other flying up the centre at about 80 ............until he sees me stopped then rakes the clutch in & hits the rev limiter just for my entertainment I presume, then disappeared as fast as he appeared.

And what's all that yank cammo shit about anyway Lol3 Maybe Monkey see (on dvd) so monkey do. Don't think it'd be too handy if you went bitumen surfing on your arse....

It's amazing how fast these boneheads are in peak hour traffic & how laughably slow through the interesting stuff Yes

I think the subliminal message might have been " hey you weak dickhead look at me I'm really moving " (or something)
I/we get going again when this other demented twerp on a 250 cruiser bogbox thing comes wobbling past me on my LEFT (the bikers cardinal sin) lane splitting up the middle & nearly clips the front of my farking BMA fer chrissake ! What the dimwit didn't realise or just didn't care about was the fact that I might have changed lanes just as he was doing his kamikaze act & we both would have gone down. I briefly thought about tagging onto him & belting the prick at the next stop but thought better of it............ bastard would prolly call the cops on me Very Happy

Pssst......... GYDYUP..............what's an "arseclown" & what do they do Confused Got me stumped digger Action-smiley-083

As I harped on some time ago the testing and licensing procedure in Australia is a joke. Some instructors form a particular part of the comunity teach their own people due to language and other barriers they may find but my problem is(we actually tested this with a friend of ours from Osaka & speaks Mandarin) that some of these techers have barriers themselves so basically its like the blind leading the blind. On the other hand lets not forget the older population who have had their license for over 40 and 50 years who are not up to date with the road rules creating hazardous situations. In Europe when you turn 60 or so you have do a refresher course/test on road rules, eyesight and be medically fit.Its just logic that your eyesight, flexibility and reactions are not what they used to be so it just makes sense to see if you are compitent enough to hold a driving permit.Maybe one day the auothorities here will see the light and common sense will prevail.

I hope that if it comes down to it i would hand my own licence in . But i would say its like when you have been drinking you think your ok to drive .

Lane splitting is just common sence i was on the Monash one morning when the trafic was stop start so i was splitting at a slow pace . I saw a bike comming up behind me at good pace so i pulled in to trafic to let him past so the idiot gave it to it must of been doing 80 got about 100m up the road did not see car with turn signal on to change lane and hit drivers door.
I pulled over to make sure he was ok he asked me to stay as witness i told him he was in the wrong but he could not understand why .

Hi Gassick. I havent been on or ridden for a while. I really just logged on because of Ron. First met him back when I had the zx12. A good mate's (currently in the Alfred from a bike accident) daughter lived with one of Rons mechanics and Ron was allowing us to play with wiring for some electronics we were building. I havent ridden much since I got married back in Nov last year. I rarely feel like riding these days. Will most likely sell the bike and buy a new cage to drive around.

I'm with you mate, riding around Melbourne, you just look at the conditions (particularly on a bike as big as a busa) and often, I say to myself "nah, not worth it". I've had cars try and move up on me when I've filtered through to the front of traffic at lights - they take exception to the fact that you've gotten in front of them. Doesn't last long though because you're out of there in a flash (safely of course). I've seen lots of bikes nearly come a cropper by not reading the conditions properly and riding too quick. But like has been mentioned before, there's crazy car drivers, crazy bike riders and crazy cyclists. No matter what vehicle they have, they can't control themselves or think logically.
