Met a bloke today on a Busa & was talking tyres .He has been told that if you have a prang with non OEM tyre's on your insurance company can
refuse the claim because of the non OEM tyre's , Any one heard that before & can shed some light on the subject ? Yes I gave him a AHC card .

With the advancing technology in rubber compounds, I'm not sure the insurance companies could make that one stick (no pun intended).....might come down to how deep your pockets are and how good a lawyer you can afford. Never heard that one before.....I crashed my "03 with Avons on her and was never asked by my insurance company about the tyres.

as long as the tyres are right size for the rim and can support the weight of the bike & rider , have appropriate speed rating for the bike ect , all good :) but i wouldnt put it past the insurance company's to try any excuse to get out of coughing up.

Speed rated to the Busa is the key to the out if they opt to take that course of action. Funny part is unless they can prove you were speeding then in reality the speed rating shouldn't come into it ................ but in the real world ?

Hi Guys , as other guys have said if the tyres are within O/E specs it shouldn't be a problem with just changing tyre brands, i would imagine if wider tyres were used then they will something to screw us with ,i have seen a few Suzuki M109Rs which have a 240 rear as standard have up to 280 wide rear tyres, even 300 with rear swing arm modications done .

No-one questioned my claim, complete write off.
I had a Michellin pilot power front & Pilot road 2 rear.
Interesting though, when I replaced the OEMs Michellin would only recommend the HPX for the Busa.
Some people are like Slinkies ... not really good for anything, but you can't help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

I think that bloke was smoking something , As that would meen cars cant use retreads i would say that as long as you have corect size they could not refuse claim .
Would have more chance of knocking my claim back for sponge hand grips

In Germany many years ago that was the case. German Design rules ensured that you could only buy tyres that were reccommended by the manufacturer. If a bike came with BT056s on iut, then you could put any tyre you liked on that bike, as long as it was a BT056! We're talking 25+years ago, don't know if such rules still exist in Germany still or not, but certainly did at that time.
Thank God we don't have crazy rules like that. We all ride differently and have our own likes and dislikes for the hoops we wear.

Max my mrs told you that those crazy rules where put in place because people where going on the autobahn doing mind bending speeds with tyres that where not correct/speed rated and dying after the tyre blew up.In Germany alot of the bike stores ask you what kind of bike you're riding when you're buying a helmet,not just out of interest but for the simple fact that they speed rate their helmets too and would advise you that it's not the safest option.I would love to have the rules they have in Germany especially speed rules,I got done doing 35 km over the limit and I was fined 35 euros after they deducted 10% of the detected speed with no points taken off my EU license...........their rules,speed limits and the quality of their roads I can live with as im sure a lot of you here would too!!!

I work for a company that own several brands of motorcycle insurance, including two of the top three m/c insurers in Australia. None of our brands decline claims based on tyre brand.
re: speed rating: Based on the insurance contracts act, they will need to prove that the rating of the tyre (or lack of) was the direct cause or a high contributor to the cause of the accident (ie, braking capability etc). Basically if you read the PDS (and can understand it), it will detail what they can or cannot decline claims for.
Best bet is to tell your insurance company what tyres you have on your bike when you set the insurance up. That way, they cannot possibly decline claims based on this alone.

Slightly off (bike) topic.
I have a 2007 Honda Legend. There is only 1 tire manufactured which meets the manufacturer's spec. There are plenty that are the correct size, but only the one which has the required strength rating.
I haven't researched it, but I believe that most average car tires have a strength rating between 80 & 90.
The Legend requires a strength rating of 100.
Just got 4 new ones. $395ea
My knowledge with issues concerning insurance goes like this:
If in the case of this Thread; if the Tyres were not/are not a contributing factor of the accident, there are no issues to awnser to.
Im with ROD on this thread, almost every Vehicle on the road does not use original Tyres.
