I was reading on the this site, (I think it was Bugso who wrote) that there was never a recall on the alloy sub-frame that '99 & '00's came out with. Yet when I picked-up my '99 from it's major service on Wed at Byrners Suzuki in Kananook the mechanic said it had the 2 recall stamps. He said these were for the cam chain oiler, (which I was aware of) & the other was for the sub frame.
Can anyone shed any light on this mystery? Can I now feel comfortable on the 4000km 2-up journey with a Ventura bag that I'm about to take or was he talking through his ring?

I saw a champagne coloured 99 model at Newcastle a few years back and it had the new subframe and the recall sticker attached under the rear seat on the frame. I had heard of this recall before I looked at this bike so there you go.

There were issues with the subframe of the early models, some cracked under load. It was found more prevelant when the pipes were modified to 4into1's and with a pillion. Suzuki "in their wisdom" rather then do a global recall and replace the alloy subframe for a steel one as later models carried - they sorta kept quiet and for those that broke their subframe they would replace it on a one to one basis, whether in or out of warranty. So there was no official recall, perhaps just an advisory to workshops to check the subframe.
I still am running with the alloy subframe and am into my 9th year on the bike. True I rarely have a pillion and when I do I advise them when mounting NOT to put all their weight on the one rear footpeg and swing over but rather to raise and slide their leg across the back seat and only when sitting fully on bike rest feet on footpegs. I advise and use that method more as a precaution then factully proven.
So there are many bikes still with their alloy subframe. However if you want to practice extra care you could mount re-enforcing brackets on the 2 arms of the frame (near the battery, thats where it has failed for some). I dont know where these are available anymore. The other method is to buy a steel subframe and replace it yourself. You may even find someone who actually want to swap his steel subframe for the older alloy one due to the alloy weighing less then the steel. However make sure that frame hasnt been in a bingle and not perfectly straight. Hope all this helps you.

The two recall stickers are both for the Cam chain situation.
One for an initial inspection and the next was for the fitting of the oil line to lubricate the adjuster mechanism.

My alloy subframe was replaced with a steel one during a "service"
I was told the frame had cracked, and told suzuki would pay for the new steel subframe under warranty, even though the bike was about 3 years old at the time, and I was the 2nd owner. I footed the bill for labour.
I rarely carried a pillion, and ran stock pipes.
just got the 2 recall stickers.
