The 2007 Hayabusa Convention. Words by Ray Buscombe

Date: 23February – 25February 2007

Two and half years ago the Australian Hayabusa Club held itâ€s inaugural convention in the Snowy Mountains and the story featured in one of the first editions of Rapid Bike Magazine. During February many of the members once again, found their way to the beautiful Lake Jindabyne for the third event. They came from all over the eastern states and invaded the Station Resort for a weekend that will live in the memory of all those who made the run.

Some members left home as much as a week early to incorporate a more relaxed tour into their itinerary while others hit the road for a fast blast the day before or even on the morning of the gathering. The group that I rode with started out as a couple leaving Brisbane on Wednesday morning and gathered members and momentum as it moved south through the magic northern NSW mountains. Other riders tacked onto the ride as the group moved south via the Putty Rd and then out for a few hot laps of Mt Panorama. By the time we congregated in Canberra for the run down the Monaro Hwy, a train of about 25 busa riders, as well as a few others, blasted into the resort late on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile another similar sized group came from the south. Both groups had their mishaps along the way and quite a few tyres had to be fitted at unscheduled intervals…

Slick preparation by a couple of organizing members meant that nearly everything ran like a well tuned BUSA.. for most of the events. A big thank you must go to Richard from Victoria and Ray from Sydney.

Nobody could stop the rain that hit the Snowies for the weekend but it really added atmosphere to the experience and while riding around the twisties was the reason for the location, the rain generated some extra entertainment opportunities.

Some brave souls did “The Loop” – Jindy – Adaminaby – Kiandra –Khancoban – Thredbo and back to Jindy on the Saturday during some really bad conditions but they all made it back to base with stories of slips and slides along with praise for stretches of glorious traffic free corner hugging.

The Australian Hayabusa Club is essentially a Cyber club with nearly all activities centered on the club web site at www.ozbusa.com and over the years local groups have grown to be a great source of bike knowledge and friendship. The annual get together provides an opportunity for as many as possible to catch up, (so to speak), with each other and show off their bikes. There is a mountain of aftermarket goodies available for customizing the Hayabusa, due mainly, to its long period in production. The options are growing by the day with many members now making their own contribution to the collection of bling on tap.

During a break in the rain, a group photo was attempted in the resort carpark and as many as 55 Hayabusas were there to get in the shot. That puts a rough estimate of 8,800 horsepower on hand to spin the earth a little faster…

The convention is by no means restricted to Hayabusa owners and many friends and partners come along for the ride and the fun that follows at the end of the day.

An auction of donated items and a series of registration and raffle prizes helped to raise a few thousand dollars for charity and the club is extremely thankful to the sponsors who supported the event, particularly the chief sponsor, Easyrider Imports.

The sky eventually cleared a little by Sunday morning and the bikes were loaded up once again for the run home. Some of the follow up chat on the club web page has likened it to something of a “Cannonball Run” staying ahead of the storm in most directions.

You can still get back issues if you missed out and want a copy. Check out the Rapid Bikes website.
