Very careful rider Cop on bike doing the right thing.
Traffic stops. Two lanes are full of cars.
He then carefully goes through the centre up to lights.
He lane splits, so IS IT LEGAL at least if the traffic has stopped??
at no time is it legal pete for any motorcycle sto lane split . as in the case of the cop if he had his lights n sirens on then that would be diffrent

It is legal for a cop to do it, but for valid reason.
Under the law they are permitted to "move through to check on traffic/motorists or possible hazards'. They do not need lights flashing or anything.
They may be doing it just for the same reasons as the rest of us but try and prove that.
I have personaly been sitting up the ass of a cop on a bike doing it in Melbourne and sat right beside him at the front of the lights. I got a fellow biker nod from him at that was it.

my dads mate is a traffic cop and he patrols the motorway from brisbane to gold coast and he said that they lane split to either check people for seatbelts and mobile phones and the other reason is to catch a bike rider splitting traffic. he said he doesn't really care about lane splitting or anything like that he just picks car drivers up for mobile phones and not wearing a seatbelt.
motorcycle cops pulling bike riders up is just f*&^ing sinfull it should be against the law

Lane splitting is still legal in WA, provided you remain in one lane or indicate if crossing a broken white line (change of lanes). You can't cross over the solid white line between lanes or at the front of the intersection.
Some people are like Slinkies ... not really good for anything, but you can't help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Not sure about the legality of it but here in ACT ive talked to a few coppers and all have said they wont pick up a motorcycle if they sensibly makes there way to the front of stopped traffic. however they said if the traffic is moving they throw the book at them. still dont know if its actually legal or ilegal but i have moved through stopped traffic to the front of red lights with police watching and have never been looked at twice for it. having said that i would never do it through moving traffic

I read a great aricle on splitting lanes put forward by the MRA. It said;
They want the law made to make splitting legal under the following rules,
1. being that a rider can not exceed a difference of 10km/h to what the traffic is moving.
2. It will only be legal up to a maximum speed limit of 40 km/h.
It argued that it safer for a rider to split lanes under the above rules. It said the dangers are increased to a rider in traffic due to drivers losing focus and a rider will just about become invisible to them over a short period of time. They will focus on the car ahead and not the rider, so at a stop they will rear end the rider and force them into the car infront.
It also raised the congestion issue of a splitting rider having an impact value of '0' to traffic.
It also mentions having motorcycle specific lanes introduced on the major freeways and also the possible use of the emergency lane in heavy traffic.
