No, I haven't run out of fuel yet, planned well on both of the last Iron Butt rides I did. Longest stretch of nothing was 411 km between gas stations. (9 away from your limit, but... California model also has slightly smaller tank due to emissions crap we've got here). Filled the tank all the way up, and set off. Getting ~51 mpg with -1 down on the SuperSprox. 08 gets awesome mileage.

Problem is I'm leading 19,000 km of Pashnit Tours each season, and with the riders, you just never know.

One of our guys 'forgot' to fill up. We poured both of fuel canisters in, but were in such a remote area, still need to siphon some gas to get him to next station.

Two months later, had another tour where we had a 257 km loop between stations & we had to fill up the V-Rod (tiny tank!) with both of them. He rolled into station with .10 gallons left in tank.

Cam, that's actually Gorilla Tape. It's like duct tape, yes, but it's really thick heavy duty stuff! No issues last 32000 km.

It's handy b/c in a jam, can just whip out a knife, cut it, and fill up our rider. The MSR Fuel canister can fit in the RKA saddlebags, but they're heavy. For years, I & my other tour guide just carried siphon hoses, but I put them on my Busa while preparing for the Iron Butt Ride (no other riders to siphon from) & been there since. They fit perfectly on the Ventura Rack.

Someone invariably always asks where the MSR fuel canisters came from - get them from the REI outdoors store:
