I have in the past played with the idea if performance or noise is what I really wanted. I am fortunate enough to have a close friend who is involved with "StreetBike" mag - who was looking for a bike to carry out some exhaust tests with.
I gave him a lend of my second Bussa "2000 Model" which they proceeded to fit a set of 4-2-1 "Magnum" Carbon. After the dyno test with the original exhaust fitted first, and then secondly after the "Magnum" was fitted - the difference was only 4HP at top end.
After taking the bike for it's first ride after having the new exhaust, I noticed it was very rough at low speed and low revs, and hesitate to accelerate through a certain throttle area.
We sent the bike back to Graham Morris Motor Cycles (who fitted the Magnun in the first place) and after final testing found that they had to reset the throttle position switch, and also cut the pink wire that runs to the EFI unit to make the thing run smoothly again.
If I was going to do this all again, and looking back on the 2000 bike exercise - for the cost of the Magnum at $2,000.00 just to reap another 4HP out of the bike - I'll probably look at a set of Carbon Bolt-On's - and go for the noise factor or check out a set of HMF high mounts from the states 4-1-2 which I did recently while visiting New York. The cost was about $1350.00 US - approx $2850.00 AUD.
And have something different !
