Thanks Peter for the info,
I went for a ride today, just a few hours and stopped once , needless to say the bike started 1st thing this morning and once again when I had a stop for a coffee. I just hope this doesnt turn out to be one of these electrical gremlins that comes and goes and no obvious cause. ( I've owned a few Italian bikes over the years and well--they had these gremins......... ) I'm going to do some continuity checks as you mentioned and check both the clutch and side stand limit switches too.
