Too right, teachers are their to educate, not be the fathers/mothers of children.
Kids now can too easily bring out the "touch me & i'll sue you" crap on teachers and what not.
In reality, the kids don't know squat, but they love being little dicks and they know they can get away with it.
Even though we had no formal physical punishment when I went to school, I could vouch for it being a good way to keep kids in line.
And one strange thing I noticed was through my last years of high school, I noticed that each new year of year 7 kids got ruder, more disrespectful & generally more brat-like. They all thought they were untouchable.
I always got a smack when I was young if I pulled out of line & I still turned out sane.
Not sure if the bigger issue is that society is trying to protect everyone from themselves or what, but it seems more and more as the years go by, despite the less strict rules in school, rules everywhere else are getting tighter. There are so many bloody little things that I am noticing change now. From terrorist attacks making everyone paranoid with security, etc. I just worry that the world detailed in books like Brave New World & Blade Runner might actually be a reality some time down the track. Scary thought.
