Hello people,
I am looking at buying myself a new Laptop, I am completely confused on what kind to choose. All I know is that I want one with the lot.
Can anybody please recommend or suggest a brand.
Most of the laptops I have looked at seem to come with Vista not windows XP. Oh me Oh my decisions decisions

Be careful what you wish for TEZ, you may end up with a MAC....
There are hundreds to choose from Mutha, you can get a good one from anything around $1000.00 to $2 or 3000.00 and they will all do just about anything you want.
What I recommend is finding one that is;
1. light weight, if you want to carry it around,
2. large screen, if you don't want to carry it around,
3. including a wireless network card,
4. DVD/CD player/burner,
5. 1gb of RAM and it can share for video card if you wish,
6. MAKE SURE IT HAS AT LEAST 3 YEAR WARRANTY..(fixing notebooks is hexxy).
7. If you want to store movies, music or photos, get the largest Hard drive you can afford.
8. Get as much licensed software included that you can afford, especially good internet security such as Trend, Macafee, or Symantec etc.
I don't particularly favour any retailer, but Officeworks usually has a pretty good selection.
You can also spec up a good DELL online if you want. They come delivered and preloaded with everything you order. You just turn it on and answer the basic setup questions before getting down to business.
Good luck. Just don't buy a brand that you've never heard of.

I have a ibook G4 14inch screen and its so much more easier to use, i dont use mine for work, just for research ......
Try to stay away from Dell, you buy one you generally don't buy another one, name brands like IBM, HP etc, sort of lock you in a bit when it comes time to change/upgrade parts........I have a software shop so I get to hear all the moans and groans......

stay clear of dell laptops! Dell was the sole supplier for a compny i worked for and the i ued a laptop for site work which was often and i can tell you without a dedicated IT deparment backing you up you gonna have issues with the f***kers! in the office they were fine cause i could just pass them onto the IT guys but out on site all alone i ended up geting a sony laptop which worked much better and more consistently. needless to say the company iworked for switched sole suppliers from dell and went with hp

Whether one brand of laptop is better than another remains to be seen.
In my many years as a desktop support technician, I have looked after Macs, Compaq's, Hewlett Packards, Toshiba's, Sharp, Dell and Acer PCs.
They all have their good and bad points.
Out of those, I can tell you that we returned more of the Compaq's, HPs and Toshiba's than any other brand for warranty work. In quantity, we supported more Dell's than any others and only had a couple of issues in the laptop arena. The Dell Optiplex range of desktops was another matter with a better than 10% failure rate.
It always depends on where the brand is sourcing their componants when they build a model.
So I wouldn't recommend any of them over any other but I do recommend buying a recognised brandname with good warranty.

Good weather, good woman, good road, good bike, good-bye!!
I've found HP and Toshiba amongst the more reliable that I have owned and/or supported - interesting that others have seen it different.
LG, Max - isn't it amazing how much better they have marketed since they changed their name from Goldstar?

It just happens by coincidence that I bought a new notebook today for Mrs B.
We took my own advice and went to Office works after pricing a few on the web.
Final choice was an ACER ASPIRE 5720Z.
It has a great stock fittings list and was $898.00 and comes with a $150.00 cashback offer till the end of March or April.
It also comes with a 90 day free trial of Symantec Internet Security and a 60 day free trial of Office 2007.
I trashed the Symantec because we already have a multi user licence for Trend Internet Security.
The stock operating system is Window Vista Home Premium.
