If anyone knows about electrical problems I would very much appreciate help my 99 has been running like shit last ride feels like only 2 cylinders working so i cleaned fuel system and spark plugs and noticed 3 yellow wires cotton covered from i would say generator where they join at coupler where melted possibly shorting out so i pulled connecters upart repaired wires and still getting hot each indevidual wire still running like shit any help would be greatfully accepted cheers crumpy.
Not much experience with motorcycle mechanics but sounds to me like rectifier problems.
Disconnect the three wires from your generator/stator and start the bike. Using a mulitmeter you should have 70v+ on all of the wires, testing from one to another. If that is good, then I would be checking your rectifier. If it's no good, then your generator/stator is dead.
Could be that there is a problem with the voltage in the circuit causing the ECU to misread signals/or even not get the signals it requires to run properly.
could be low voltage or too high voltage....is your battery going flat? Do your headlights seem to be brigher than they were before, is your battery bubbling over.....all symptoms...!!
Thats probabl as far as my advise will get you...but it could lead you in the right direction!!

Look at the connector at the rectifier end (take offf tail fairing first) its a known suspect. If you have an IR thermometer($50 for a cheapie), its easy to check all connector points for high resistance.

If the connector is faulty at the rectifier its usually fairly obvious , but i had never thought to use a IR thermometer . have to get one.
IR guns are pretty useless...your fingers are more sensitive
if you must use technology that is beyond the scope here...use thermal imaging

High tension power supply boys use the IR guns in helicopter patrols to do exactly the same thing!

I'm really glad to hear it was only the plugs causing you the major grief Crumpy.
At least you know how long they are good for now. (I think I wrote in the service book when I fitted them).
Sorry I can't help you with the electrical issue mate.
