Vinyl Vs Cd - Which Is Better Sound?
#1
This came up the other night at lattes.
Can you tell the difference?
Can you remember the difference?
Still got around 2,000 albums in my loungeroom,
Hope they bury me with them...

Cheers,
Pete

Hi DJ,

Yes I can tell the difference between the big black disc and the humble CD. Using todays electronic equipment with Transistor amps etc the quality of the LP is hard to beat. There's a lot of detail in the LP that the old 5W amps could not hang onto. The CD in my opinion is a convenience, but I still prefer to listen to the LP.

I too have tons of both and love them both as well.
However, I have an immaculate copy of Dark Side of the Moon in both Quadraphonic vinyl and Super Audio CD.
There is so much more you can hear on the SACD version that you simply cannot hear on the vinyl that I don't think anybody could argue in favour of the vinyl if they hear the difference.
I simply could not replace most of my old vinyls and will continue to play them. Some of the most loved are also a bit scratched these days though. They do wear out.
There is nothing worse than buying a cd only to hear that it is simply a recording of an old vinyl album with all the pops and shit.
My 2c worth.

Yes vinyl is a pain to use and yes everytime you play a record it wears due to friction, but as all the hi fi heads say,a top of the range turntable will always kill a top of the range cd player for pure natural sound.Technically because digital takes bits of info from the sound wave,so there is always bits missing as opposed to the pure natural sound wave of a turntable. This is why i liken it to carbys compaired to digital fuel injection. If a carby is set up right, the engine will only take the amount of fuel that is needed, where as with injection the engine gets the amount of fuel that the ecu is programed to give it. Phuck its the phantom!

Rocket,
You make a lot of sense sometimes.
I'm with you on this one although I have gone over to the other side.(using cd)
Do yourselves a favour and next time you are near a hi end audio store like Trevor Lees Audio or something pop in and ask them to play something on their best turntable and you will swear you are in the room with the musicians... Cheers,

Vinyl sounds better to me too

"Quadraphonic" now there's a blast from the past... still remember the salesman telling me "this is the future"

Well, there's a sucker born every minute (me) & "the future" ended up being the past (real quick) in Gisborne tip

I still have a quadro vinyl disc "collector's item"

They all sound good on the right equipment.
Apart from a live performance, I reckon it is hard to beat a top Music DVD in 5.1 DTS on an authentic acoustically tuned system.
Willing to share the experience with anyone who cares to visit.

OK DJ how about this. Back in the late 70's I was such a Hi Fi buff that I even paid 175 pounds sterling for just a wee cartridge with needle called Sure V15 type IV, if I remember correctly (cant believe I even remember the model No.). I also used Bose 9's series 4 (if I remember correctly) and they werent cheap. blah blah - tick - blah blah - tick - LOL

Sure Volvi..get it? ...Sure
The Bose 901's had THE reputation too.
I used to use $600 moving coil cartridges around 10 years ago.
Seperate stepup transformer (pre preamp) required as well.
I used to block off my turntable with a wooden wall so the babay couldn't get near it!
Can be a veery expensive hobby HiFi.
I used to sneak my new equipment into the house and set it up before the boss noticed.
It got so bad that my wife spotted some new amp I had smuggled in and screamed "You've bought more f***ing hifi equipment" and started crying!

eg one of my many setups over the years...
Dynaudio 3 way speakers ($2,500)
Naim Pre Amp ($600)
Naim main amp ($3000)
Linn Sondeck turntable ($1500)
Moving Coil cartridge ($600)
Cable ($500!)

Yep, next to the bikes, music is the next favourite hobby.
Wife gets upset when her china collection starts rattling though. So do I, it ruins the clarity.
My Stereo / HiFi is approaching 25 years old soon and still belts out a great sound with depth and clarity. (Sansui)
I will have to start thinking about updating that gear, but like I said, I have the DTS home theatre as well.
As you know, if you want to buy good quality gear these days it costs a bomb.

Hold your horses DJ.
If you've still got gear like this, I'm coming to visit you.

Do your ears still hear the quality sound after DJaying?

Sorry Busgo,
I have NO system now!
But I was RIGHT into it for a decade or so.
You would tweak just like u guys do on the bikes...
I even went to the extreme of moving my system as a try into another room just to try to improve the sound because the new room was rectangle shaped!!!...Got rid of it all when I started djing (started on my 40th Bday believe it or not)
But as I've said b4 I have music throughout the house via my pc system.
It's almost always on, wakes the whole house up each morning as it is my alarm clock too!!
Most of the time when djing mobile gigs you are behind the music and therefore a bit protected..I said most of the time...
My ears are fine so far, but my wife would say otherwise...

Sounds like you are a bit into it yourself??... Cheers,
Pete
