I have been trying different brands and octane levels lately to try and find the best mix for my bike.
I have a 99 with K&N filter and Staintune pipes. No electrical mods such as TRE or PC.
I have found that with BP, Mobil or Caltex 98 octane I get really good performance with or without the baffles in the cans.
However with any brand 95 octane fuel, the performance is very erratic. Sometimes it seems to be as good as 98 octane and other times it feels like the bike just does not want to work hard. It never preignites but it just does not go well.
BP Premium 95 octane is the absolute worst fuel I have ever run in any bike as far as performance and consistancy go.
I know some riders use standard unleaded and others only ever use 1 brand of 98.
Has anyone else noticed this variance in fuel quality and what is your preferred juice?

personally only use BP Ultimate and now for some years i''l go the extra k's just to put that fuel in and no other. no complaints, no desire to try anything else. <i></i>
I've never noticed any difference in fuels, I use standard now and I would think that unless the bike was remapped or fitted with a knock sensor and an ECM that could adjust Timing/Fueling to suit octane rating (and detonation) then the only difference worth anything would probably be at idle.
The standard Busa is tuned for low octane fuel anyway. Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.<i></i>
Well, I did not do the first 50k on my bike and when I say it has no Electrical mods, I mean there are none visible and none that I know of. Unless the standard ECM can be mapped to a higher octane fuel, my Busa does not like any less than 98 octane so I guess I will always try and stick to it.
I'm not so certain that you always get what is marked on the pump though.
BTW, it now has 76k on it and still runs like a new one, on 98, that is.
Anyone else have opinions about the fuel?

Seems to run smoother and more responsive than others.
I remember hearing that Shell Optimax is bad for bikes.

Have just finished running a couple of tanks of standard ULP. Filled up with Caltex Vortex and it seems to run a bit smoother. Would like to try 98 Ultimate but the price in Canberra is prohibitive at the moment. It's $1.27 a litre for standard ULP. Ultimate goes about $1.39. My spouse would kill me for being so extravegant. <i></i>
disheartening paying that amount but in the end its only about $2 extra a tank, sure she wont divorce you for that. cant even get a latte for that. nike - just do it. <i></i>
While I was at BIKECARE in Newcastle today,(they are our local Dyno), I read a report on the wall from SHELL explaining the benefits of Optimax.
In a nutshell they claim that ALL high octane fuel damages rubber fuel lines but if they are replaced on the scheduled maintenance plan, there should be no issues.
(The BUSA schedule is every 4 years)
Apart from being a 98 octane fuel the other benefit that Optimax provides and the others do not is that it also has a small dose of injector cleaner in it and it is a higher density fuel which means you get better mileage per tank because less is injected per stroke.

I'd be more concerned with the pump and filter on "in tank" 01+ models, all plastic fuel lines at least won't give any trouble.
There is some issues with vaporising on hot days as alky has a lower boiling point, but again more of a problem for 99-00 .

It's not the Optimax 98 that has Ethanol in it. It is the Shell 100 that is 5%.
I'll have a look at Google and see what gives.

For you guys who like BP, I'm pretty sure that Mobil and BP are the same company and have the same product more or less.
There was an amalgamation of loads of fuel companies going on in Europe a few years ago. Total ended up with a long name that included three companies that got together. The word at the time was that that the fuel for each of these new companies was the same across the amalgamated brands. So, if you can't find BP try Mobil, and let me know. <i></i>
There is only two refineries in sydney.Caltex and shell.Mobil and bp and caltex are all the same base fuel with different additives.Shell generally only supplies shell.I used to service the boilers at clyde and they told me this.The only other fuel in sydney is the imported malaysian(woolworths rubbish) to the best of my knowledge.In victoria its a mobil refinery and caltex and bp buy off them down there.
