Riding Boots - any bad ones?

This is going to sound really daft but what sort of socks do you find best? Long thinnish Footy socks (and by footy I mean League, not that nancy boy AFL), shorter but thicker Hard Yaka type socks for work boots or anything else? I'm just trying to think of what would be best for comfort, breathing etc in these big boots.

....i usually let the ambient temperature have the final say on that one, Bundybusa.
summertime i go for the shearest (most thin) socks i can grab outta da draw in a hurry (my foot tends to be a little looser in the boot, but it's not an issue). winter riding, the exact opposite (take a pair of both styles when you do your trip to the shop).....hope that helps, m8.

I always wear "Explorer' sox when riding. thick, absorbe the sweat & keeps your foot fitted nicly into the boot

I wear footy socks as I can fold them over the top of the boots (stops the velcro tops of mine from rubbing on my calves) & also I have big feet & calves so explorers make the boots too tight for me.
It's gunna come down to personal preference so yeah, as bazman said, take a pair of each with you to try.

Thanks for all your replies, advice and patience. Everyone has been very helpful and polite. It's great to come across such a great bunch of "like minded" people.
Now, onto jocks. Bazman, your Avatar says you are an "ex-porn star" so I guess you probably don't wear any. Just kidding, no help needed with the jocks - "the boys" (Leftie & Rightie) and I are just fine in that department. I'll keep you posted when I return from Sydney. Thanks again Michael

Finally went to Sydney the other week and picked up a pair of boots (and gloves). Went to MCS Motorcycles in Wentworth Ave (in the city) and no one would come near me to serve me let alone give me some advice. Walked down the road to Action Suzuki (also in Wentworth Ave) and got served straight away and got some excellent advice also (hence I bought gloves as well) - I wish I could remember the guys name to give him a big rap.
Ended up going for a pair of Alpinestar SMX-5 boots and Alpinestar GPX gloves. I can't give any feedback on them yet as it has been raining ever since I got back 'to Bundy. But I would like to again thank everyone for their advice and recommendations. Cheers, Michael

If you ride and use your boots for all day comfort ROSSI's are the go not that much ankle protection in a fall but heaps of all day comfort. Best of all any problems they get replaced or fixed real quick usualy replaced I had a zipper go instant replacement even when months old. the wife had some DRI RIDERS took 2 months before a replacement came (she wore thongs until they were replaced ) no just kidding, but she had to buy something else till they came for some reason she didnt want DRI RIDERS again.If you have wide feet atleast you can get your feet into them I found alot of the so called pro boots so small I couldnt get much past the toes into them let alone do them up must be italian or chineese designed not flat fat footed ausie designs.

Great choice Bundy. I've just worn my Alpinestars for a week straight and they are very comfortable both on the bike and off. I wear mens thin work socks. I find your feet don't get too sweaty in them and you can wriggle your toes if you are going long distances. In saying that, I can put thick explorers on if it is cold, but I've never been that cold that the shin guards haven't protected me.

I have been wearing a pair of dri riders for last 2 years and have over last winter been taking on water. Notice a crack in the gear change area for $200 price think they are poor value. Would need to be assured next riding boots are full leather. Plastic vinyal materials are very risky when it comes to safety items. Your views appreciated.

I finally wore the new AlpineStars boots on a ride for the first time yesterday. They were comfy, didn't seem to be hot (even with the explorer socks) and weren't heavy like I thought they would be. I did notice that they definitely make it interesting going up through the gears - I found it hard to get used to tilting my foot a lot further forward/down so that i could get my boot under ther gear lever. I was missing gears everywhere i.e. I thought I had changed up, but was still in the same gear. I guess I could adjust the gear lever up by one spline but then I am worried that it will be too high for the down changes. Any ideas?
Oh, I also wore the new gloves for the first time. I wish I had remembered to break them in first - took quite a bit of getting used to and to mould to my hand.

Yes I have seen your undies Simmo, I'm still in therapy. I like the way I get to see them pretty much every time I see you TOO!
Glad you went with the Alpinestars Bundy, I love mine. Don't worry about the lack of feeling at the start, you'll get used to them, I got a lot of mis-changes at first. If it is a real issue, you can move your gear lever. Wait for a bit first.
