Obviously I have been living on Mars, in a cave, with my fingers in my ears. I had never heard of a "big bang" engine. Change the firing order to give different power curve and sound etc.
Anyone know more about this phenomenon?
Also has anyone ever done a busa in this config? What little I have read suggests that it will put heaps more stress on your head etc so a big block like the busa might not be condusive to such shenanigans.
Cheers

Most folk normaly think of the R1 as being "Big Bang".
Although unconventional, its not a true Big-bang layout.

R1 as stock is not a big bang at all.
rather 2 quick, space, then 2 quick. just like a pair of 90 degree v-twins 180 degrees out of phase. in theory it allows the tyre more recovery time. not sure if it is snake oil or not, doesnt seem to give any real advantage out on the tracks. N seat of pants riding on the open road aint never going to feel any difference one way or the other.
Big bang refers to firing both rising cylinders together.
have seen and heard an earlier R1. was quite quick around The paperclip at willowbank. Sounded wierd. not like a twin but not like a four either.
Cant see why the Busa head should not be up to it.

Nope, but I fitted Danmoto carbon slip ons to my 2011 blue. Sound throaty and "normal" while riding, from a spectators point however I sound like a huge VFR lol, a friends son recorded us drag racing at Willowbank, haha my ride sounded a little but pschitzofrenic (spelling lol) didn't know whether to be a twin a four or a hybrid ;)

Not snake oil, I remember seeing a famous video of a gsxr750 being done in UK by someone...forgot his name though...Tim I think?
Lots of internal strengthening needed to compensate, I've read.
Would be interesting on a busa actually!

As Simmo said the Yamaha R1 has a cross-plane crankshaft (the conrods journals are staggered at 90 deg) which has nothing to do with a big bang. While the cross-plane crankshaft arrangement offers benefits like very smooth power delivery (similar to the V-twin) which explains why Lorenzo's tyres seem to last much longer. The big bang on the other hand offers only a sound change and possibly more vibration. Cannot see the reason to do such thing to a busa or any other bike at all. The coss-plane crankshaft on the other hand would be bloody fantastic

Know of a big bang truimph, and an early R1
both struck tuning issues , needing big changes in the velocity stacks and exhaust due to the characteristics of 2 cys pulling or exhausting at once
both gained torque and lost a little hp

Honda cbx pairs cylinder numbers 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4.
what you are talking about with firing plug is/was known as wasted spark ignition. Both plugs in a pair fired together, one on a power stroke and the other on an exhaust stroke.
Until the advent of eletronic systems all Jap fours were set up this way. meant only 2 sets of points and 2 double ended coils.or in the case of the CBX 3 of each. cheap and easy. the plug firing on the exhaust stroke does nothing, hence "wasted"
all straight engines, of even number cylinders 4 or more, lift pistons in pairs unless of the Cross plane type were the crank pins are arranged in a progresive manner depending on the number of cylinders. eg the R1 4 pots every 90 degrees
the big bang engine is "sposed" to more economical with tyres. Snake oil or not? your call
