Just been told that this proposal is being looked at in other states. Who will be required to maintain the 1.5m clearance? Does the sweat wheel have keep 1.5m clear, or will we have to keep 1.5 m away from them? How's that gonna work?

While cycling is becoming ever more popular we all have to think about the impact of cyclists on our roads. I have no issue of our roads being shared with them but if we have to be considerate of cyclists then it should go both ways. So many times I have come across a group (3 or more) riding side by side taking up the whole lane... While they are riding as safe as they can the low speeds they do create dangerous actions from motorists trying to get past.
I say let cyclists loose on any road with a posted speed of 60k or lower, for roads posted at 80 set a min speed of 60 , roads posted 90 a min speed of 70 and so on... If anyone ( including motorists )are found continually going under the min speed book the crap out of them . If they want specialised tracks outside city limits then they can fund them just as us rego payers fund common roads. Who knows some do gooder gov idiot might find millions in grants to make cycle only tracks that go for miles and miles..

Make them all pay for CTP Green Slip Insurance & be required by law to fit rear view mirrors to their pushbikes.

What a ridiculous rule...who's to say if you got too close....the cyclist? some of those already think they own the road. Will a 50 mm infraction cost three points and a three hundred dollar fine??

I can see a huge increase of complaints to the plod regarding this. Just another piece of ill thought out restrictive legislation directed at those who pay for using the roads.

I've been a keen cyclist for over 30 years and have noticed driver's attitudes become more aggressive over the years. Cyclists are extremely vulnerable on the roads. I know as I've been hit by cars three or four times now over that period. Luckily no serious injuries.

Trucks scare the shit out of me when the scream past within inches, even when the entire other lane is free and they have chosen not to move over because we have the audacity to be on the road. As far as I'm concerned, I pay three lots of rego (two cars and a Busa) so I've got as much right to be on the road as anyone else.

I often ride two abreast in a group as it's much safer because it forces cars to actually go around you, rather than trying to squeeze past through a traffic island because many of then can't judge how wide their car is. Or when they are in a hurry to get past only to stop to turn right 50 meters up the road. The alternative is slow down, lose 20 seconds of your trip and everyone gets where they're going in one piece.

If you think you're a vulnerable minority on a motorbike, try riding a pushbike.

Like all things it takes only a few to ruin it for the rest. I do look out for cyclists so I dont end up being held accountable for injuries but it is a royal pain in the arse when somes cyclists insist on pushing to the front of the queue at a set of lights only to have the same cars overtake again. ditto riding two or more abreast.

I think in Vic the rule has always been 1m minimum distance. And pushies are supposed to ride within 1m of the gutter/edge of the road.

I'm afraid I'm with RaZ... all too often cyclist meander around in front of vehicles and then expect them to avoid a collision. I'm not saying all cyclists are the same but I have seen too many who are.

The worst offenders seem to be the messenger ones...traffic stopped?...no problem up onto the footpath and fxxk anyone in the way...how dare they clutter the footpath up? seems to be these retarded riders opinions.

The times I disliked was drving in country areas (I lived int he Mountains) and going around a blind corner @ 80-100 kph on my side of the road when suddenly there 6-10 cyclists doing about 35 kph taking up the entire side of the road... nowhere to go and nothing to do but jump on brakes...
I feel the speed of cyclists on open raods to be more of a concern than enything else... just like gross over speeding, gross underspeeding creates a dangerous environment. Enjoy your cycle, have fun getting fit but please.. PLEASE.. consider others on the road and remember that if you can't keep tot he average speed of all vehicle on a stretch of road then mayby you need to find somewhere else to use (race/drag track for the speedsters, lower posted speed limits roads for the cyclists)

Went past a pushie on the Kiewa highway today. Over a crest in a 100kmph zone. he was riding a metre in from the edge, nearly in the middle of the lane, with oncoming traffic. I was on my bike so could easily get round, but if I was in my car I'd have been hard on the brakes, over the top of him, or into oncoming traffic. Then I suppose it would be my fault?
