<----- When are we getting rid of this?

The Union Flag on the Australian flag is just so out of date (although this one looks like a Kiwi flag).

A country like Australia should not have another country's flag on it's own. I've heard the argumants for it and they are just pants!

Heritage. Okay, but there's a lot of heritage that just doesn't go away with a flag change. A subtle change maintains the heritage (all blue with Southern Cross), and would represent a new era of maturity as a country that adds to the heritage.

The flag we fought for. Again okay, and a tough one while war veterans are still in the living memories of their relatives, but didn't they fight for an Australia that would be developing in it's own chosen direction - which it has been doing. This generation needs to continue that fight, (ther not joining the Army and haven't accepted their responsibility, yet), and what better way than under their own flag.

I've seen loads of flags since arriving here like the blue/white southern cross, which are all a part of Australian hertiage but moved aside.

I'm no Brit basher - I'm still a citizen of that country, but even they want Australia to become a republic. 20 years ago Australia was regarded as a joke in the UK, - well suited to fuelling the UK superiority complex, which Croc Dundee and Barry Humphreyes' characters concreted. Now that's changed and there are the best part of 58,000,000 people there who would give their right arm to become Australians.

Even Ghana was independent in 1957. They, and others like them, remain in the Commonwealth with Queenie at the head, - the heritage remains.

My daughter was born in London, but by the strange laws of the land was an Australian and not English, which is why I'm here. She was the best thing to ever happen to me, and I gave her the gift of life. In return she gave me Australianship. I'm dying to become a citizen, but want to do it under an Aussie flag, that I hope remains the same except without the Union Flag in the corner. There's no reason why the Union Flag can't take a place beside the Aussie and Aboriginal flags when appropriate.

C'mon guys, who do I have to kill! (oops, sorry ossifer).

Here bloody here! I have the tee shirt! Trouble is the spin doctors doctored the referendum to get the result they wanted on the republic. They didn't ask if you wanted to become a republic, no, first they designed a crappy model of a republic and then asked if you wanted that! Cunning stunt!

The Aussie Flag is the only one I have had since I was born (HERE, in Australia).
It means more to me than any other.

The fact that imports have come from all over the world in the last 50 years means nothing.

The rule is, if you come here to live, you take what ya get.

The natives never had a flag till some militants saw that everyone else had one, so their's doesn't count. I may be wrong, but I don't think it has been voted for by the aborigines as a nation.

I also resent the way that the Europeans colonised the world by force and religion. However, I would not be here if they hadn't.
The Australian flag represents our heritage as a nation whether we like it or not and is a symbol of the United States of Australia. i.e NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, NT and ACT.
All of the states and territories were established under British rule. No one elses.

I am however, ALL FOR BEING A REPUBLIC.

I'm with you BUSGO, however, I believe that the flag represents a country, not is the country. Many people argue that wars were fought for the aussie flag, I beg to differ. I have the greatest respect for those that served with the Australian Armed Services, however, they did not fight for the flag, they fought for what it represents. Some may even argue that they fought for the interests of other countries.

In short, whatever our flag, it merely represents what we all stand for. Personally, I don't care if we keep the current version, or swap the the Eureka or even the ATSI flag, it will still represent Australia.

BRING ON THE REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

"God save the Queen..........because nothing will save the governor general "

Ah yes....those imortal words uttered by ol Goof Whitelamb

The world's biggest Republic (US) cannot sack an incompetent president like our system can sack an incompetent government & prime minister (from either side of politics).

Right now there's millions of yanks who would give their right arm to get rid of Bush....but can't until the next election.

If that's republicanism....you can shove it, I want to retain the right to sack boof heads

You can't sack the government, only the queen or her representative can. And they are not elected and cannot be sacked.
Bring on the republic!!

ok, here we go again.................

Why all of the angst about changing the flag or about being in a hurry to become a republic?
Aren't there more important things to be using our valuable time and money on? Like piffing the grossly disshonest Howard Government for starters? How about homeless kids? how about folks without jobs? how about people not being able to provide for thier retirement? how about the fact that you are compeled to pay for private health cover over a certain wage and it aint worth squat if you get really sick? how about the state of the ailing and grossly underfunded public hospital system? how about the fact that a nurse told be the other day (when my daughter wasin the er) that she wasn't sure if the doctor had drawn up the correct dosage of medication because "I don't get paid to think"!!!! how about doctors leaving the service and new ones not wanting to start because of the treat of litigation. how about nobody wanting to do anything just incase they get sued.

WHERE DO I STOP???????

I am all for a republic in due course, and I served in the ARMY so don't change the flag, might mean squat to you but not to us. But let's sort some IMPORTANT SHIT out first. Cheers,
Holge

Unfortunately this "Grossly dishonest Government" is better than the last one we had AND there is nothing better on the horizon that I can see.

Yes, democracy has its disadvantages such as relying on economic support from the private sector.
We all have to do the best with what we have though and hope that enough public pressure is exerted on the government to improve the status quo.

I agree that people fight for their country not a flag.

Australia gains more than it loses in being independent. Those countries in the Commonwealth that have done it show this is the case. It's also important in the global village to show the world, as well as your own people, what your country stands for in world terms.

Like him or not, John Howard (and I'm not a fan) is the only politician the world recognises as a Statesman - his regard is probably higher than Australia's itself in world terms.

Having someone else's flag on yours is damaging pass a certain point. This flag will never disappear, but just as not everyone is a fan of the national anthem, not everyone will be a fan of removing the Union Flag, but it'll still represent Australia better.

The Union Flag is one flag, made up of three others then on the Aussie flag - that's FIVE flags. Look at the other countries in the Commonwealth that do this as well - they're one tenth of what Australia is, and that's where this flag keeps us.

Holge... you can stop at the point where you ask "Whos responsibility is it really?"

In the vast majority of cases its nothing to do with the Govt. Homeless kids have parents and extended families. If the parents are abusers who's responsibility is that ? If the kids are out of control.... who's responsibility is that ?

We have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. There are more jobs available than we have population to fill. If someone can't immediately take on a particular job, they can be trained for free. The majority of long term unemployed want to be paid for sitting on their arse. Every child in this country gets an education. Every adult can be trained or re-trained. Just how much of the problem is the Govt. ? What do we expect them to do that they aren't already doing in some way ?

I'm not having a poke at you Holge... not at all. This is just one of my soap box things.

People won't take responsibility. They sue at the drop of a hat so everyone is afraid of litigation. I had a client once who received $55000 for slipping over in Woolworths on a lump of ice-cream. HIS KID DROPPED THE ICE CREAM ! What about the stupid woman who sued Macca's for burning herself with coffee - she had placed the styrofoam cup between her thighs whilst driving. Cost Maccas $500,000 and they were ordered to put a warning on coffee cups to say the contents were hot. Maccas public liability insurance increased 60% because of that one stupid, irresponsible moron. Common sense is dying. We are turning into a race of people who believe all misfortune is someone else's fault.

Then comes the greatest laugh of them all. The population refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and shift blame for everything on the government. So, the government goes into overdrive trying to prevent all us poor little useless souls from hurting ourselves. Then we all want to have a big whinge about how the Government is treating us all like children and taking control of our lives.

Is it any wonder they lie to us ?

Holge... again... this isn't directed at you.

The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob

I too am firmly resolved to have a country free of the Empire, I loved the Eureka Stockade Flag until the BLF adopted it. We are all one under the Southern Cross, brothers and sisters together. I fervently pray that we don't have to have a civil war in order to gain our independance. If any government tries to foist an unworkable or unbalanced system of government on us, then the question will be answered by force of arms and determination by normal people. Howard is a foul little syphlitic pussbag, but the little shitbag is actually doing a good job of keeping us economically viable. Labour have no one and the Greens and well meaning idiots.

Come the revolution.
