“Don’t worry, if we hit one you’ll hardly even feel a bump, it’s a bit like hitting a huge bug”
This was my answer as yet another dickhead on a bike came around another blind corner, knee down, hugging the centre line, only to be met by my bulbar . . . , as it preceded the forty odd feet of coach and 3 dozen odder passengers, now amusedly watching the biker frantically trying to keep his rubber on the road, his head on his shoulders, and his shit out of his trousers.
You see, it’s simple geometry, to get a big vehicle around a tight corner you need all your side of the road . . . and often 1 to 2 metres of the other side of the road.
I drive the roads up to Falls Creek, and around Mt Buffalo, and Bright all the time in a big bus (and whenever possible on a hayaBUSa), and I’m terrified that one day, one of these dickheads will have absolutely nothing in reserve to get out of my way. I’ve never had a problem with other vehicles my size on the same corners, as we are always expecting that a great bloody truck of bus may be coming the other way, and we’re prepared.(the odd car has gone bush, but that’s another story)
So everyone please remember, if it’s a blind corner, don’t hug the centreline, and keep plenty in reserve to get out of the way in case I’m coming the other way.
Ten Tenths is only for the track. When I meet you guys I don’t want it to be for the last time!
(Prompted because it’s the silly season, the Ulysses are heading down to Tassie, the great roads and great weather, and the roads are full of bikes heading home from Phillip Island. – and I’m not one of them )
