Up the East Coast

I'm moving up to Port Douglas from Sydney at the end of the year. I'm guessing a 4 day trip. Has anyone done the trip before? Any clues on the best route to take?

Hi Debandee,
Sydney to Pt Douglas huh Sounds good. Definately stay off Hgw 1 Speed cameras galore and over policed to buggery.
The New England is a little better but it would still pay to be on your guard.
Personally my route would be as follows:
Turn off Hgw 1 after Raymond Tce and ride north via Glouster, Walcha, Uralla and Armidale.
From there via Waerfall way through Ebor and Clouds Ck to Grafton.
From Grafton head north to Casino. (IT is worth a detour along the Clarence river to Lawrence)
From Casino through Kyogle and turn right onto the Lions rd which will take you up over the Border ranges into Qld.and on to Murwillumbah. Follow the Numinbah valley to Nerang where you can join Hgw 1 to get you through or around Brissy.
From Brissy ther is excellent riding north through Woodford, Maleney, Kenilworth and on to Gympie or from Woodford ride out to Kilcoy, Nanango, Gayndah, Monto (have a look at Cania Gorge on the way past) and on to Biloela.
From there continue on to Dululu and Mt Morgan (worth an hour or 2 here) and on to Rocky.
From Rocky, unless you want to do a major detour you don't have much choice. Stick to Hgw 1 to Mackay and beyond. It is as boring as bat shit up to Mackay but gets more interesting after that with lots of little places bobbing up every few Ks.Airlie beach is worth a look of course just for the eye candy.
Hope this helps. If I can be of further assistance my mobile is 0438189761 Regards

"Drove" (Car) to Port Douglas from Brissy earlier this year.
Brissy to Mackay 1st day,
Mackay to Port Douglas the 2nd.
Used the main coast highway all the way.
Easy drive, Road / directions / Servo's etc.
Couple of good bits, but 95% was boring as Hell !
Next time im going inland where possible even if it takes longer.
Saw LOTS of Cop's in their standard "Camera 4x4's", was sure i'd been had, still had no tickets so guess i was lucky.

I like Port Douglas, it isnt cheap,
but its a lot nicer than Cairns IMO.

Have fun.

Hi all
We finally made it here!!
I'll post a proper discription of how the trip was and what we saw.
This country is amazing!
The route wasn't as Chopper suggested, we took a more inland route that was mostly flat, straight country... and no coppers for 3000kms.
We left sydney a few days after Christmas and arrived just after New Years (Trust me, NOTHING happens in Clermont).
Tetsu-ko is in need of a her 12,5 service and I need some suggestions for a reputable Busa doctor in the Cairns area. I've been pointed toward the local Suz dealership, Wayne Leonards and the yamaha dealership. I've been told to run and hide from a bike mechanic near Port Douglas (no names on this site, mind).
Any suggestions will be mch appreciated.
I post in the next week or so... or more - this is the relaxed life after all.
Keep Riding
