The CX 500. Yep, I put it into my top ten motorcycles list. They deserve it considering how many were sold despite looking as ugly as sin!

They could obviously pull the chicks back then....

Started off as a two-wheeled R&D project for a Honda car

and became revered by many around the world...

The CX could be modified to look like:

a cafe racer....

a prop from Easy Riders....

a motocrosser...

a flat tracker

a bizarre experiment...

or a photoshop expression session model
[Image: CX_turbo-p.jpg]
but, alas, most ended up as boat anchors.... (focus REALLY hard on the parts, METAL parts)...

Yeah go the mighty plastic maggot. Honda also released the CX650 in a baby goldwing version with full dress fairings and a luggage system.

and a 650 turbo version as well
CX500 . . . are we talking about the CX500????

. . . my mother always told me, if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all.

I rode a CX500turbo once. (only 17 brought into the country)
I saw one parked outside a house, and as you do at 18, went up, knocked on the door and offered to swap a ride on my new CBX1000 - not as rare but definitely "showy" He agreedIdiot2

The thing had nothing!!!!!! was as gutless as a 250cc . . . untill it hit about 5000k. Then all hell broke loose, the tacho lanuched itself into the red, and no matter how fast I changed up it just stayed there.
Next thing I know I'm doing about 180 in a back suburban street in Albury. Funny thing is it still felt slow. No reef your arms out acceleration, no screaming engine, no breeze??? The fairing was so good that it was totally boring. I was completely dissappointed.

This bike was boring . . . I think a CX could make an excellent boat anchor.
Remember Keith Williams and his motorcycle museum on Hamilton Island? Well I worked for a shop that serviced and repaired many of the bikes in that museum. One day Keith sent over his low km CX500 Turbo. He said there was something wrong with the 'computer' it kept turning the bike off. So I took it for a test run and yes, absolutely gutless up until 5000rpm when it took off like a scalded cat (it seemed like a scalded cat after the cb250n-like power below 5000) then promptly died. Turned out it was the wastegate which was siezed shut. So I managed to get it out, repaired the bushing and got it all back on the road. But then it was even worse. Should have kept the wastegate jammed! Gutless. Never rode the 650 turbo. Maybe one day.
ermm guilty, I dont know about you guys but I loved it. Bought mid '82 had it for 6 yrs and traded in for a CBR1000 Blue/White which I dearly loved too.

True it was gutless off the lights but then when the turbo kicked in around 4500 it came into its own. Memorable bike remember it was 1981 when it came out, thats almost 30 yrs ago. i can think of many true flops since that one. It was a bike ahead of its time imho.

Oh by the way I have my helmet from back then on ebay, seems to have generated quite a bit of interest. Its a Wayne Gardner Shoei, to old to wear but a collectable, just thought Id mention it here if some might be interested in it.

I remember being amazed that they had a "computer". They even had a clock on the dash if memory serves me correct. Don't get me wrong, I'd definitly have one in my collection. Way ahead of their time.Pi_thumbsup
I had a CX500 AND a CX650 Turbo. Lotta fun.

THe 500 used to get the speed wobbles at about 145klm/hr.....

Yes, I really like the black cafe racer. I never thought a CX could be so cool. Probably still wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding though.

I almost bought one for my girlfriend at the time, (CX 500 non turbo) but it weighed a tonne. We settled on a CB instead.

That one looks fantastic too. It still must weigh in at over 200kg though don't you think? Especially with those Comstar wheels and that lump of a motor!!!
