Busa shit itself today on the freeway. Had to get Dark Cloud to bring the trailer and pick me up. degrading experience all round! especially on such a nice day, all dressed up with my new boots and all - what a bummer. Rectifier I think - only 12v on the meter. No sadder sight than a dead Busa? Other bikes I'd beat to death on the spot - but this one I put my arm around and spoke to. Am I cracking up? Back to sea next Wednesday!

Read this an I wasn't sure if "Dark Cloud" was the missus or a mate, i'm guessing the missus..

So while i'm sorry bout the bike, how in hell am I sposed to train my missus to hitch a trailer let alone drive with one..

Dang man I thought I had my gal trained, I bow to the master.

Lol3 If I think I may need the trailer for something and the mrs needs to drive, I hitch it up, point it in the right direction and tell her under no circumstances to try and reverse with it on. Frown

Nothing wrong with talking to her, I know the Hondas have trouble with the rectifier but not the Suzuki:-( suppose everything can break down.

I gave up in the end and took it to the local bike shop - Powerhouse in Pakenham, Vic - who have always been good to me. very patient with me, when I bring in bits I've stuffed up by try to save a buck and fix it myself! Anyway, rectifier was stuffed. Most likely because of the headlight modulator flicking the headlight on/off (?) Its easy to turn it off, so i wont run it for a while and see what happens. Luckily had another rectifier off the engine I recently bought. Time to admit that I havent got much of an idea how a rectifier works - any one got a simple explanation? Its another one of those mysterious boxes, to me!

basically a rectifier changes AC current to DC current....
the earlier bikes and current lawn mowers have a direct DC power generator (dynamo)... so no rectifiers are needed but the more current alternators produce an AC current which then gets converted to DC by the rectifier..

Like Batfink said. When you consider that the Busa generator pumps out 70V alternating current (AC) at 5000rpm and this is converted to 13.5 - 15.5V direct current (DC) by the regulator/rectifier, then you can understand why the wee beasty gets so hot! It's working almost as hard as Gillard's PR team!

The heat comes from the rectifier's diodes lopping the AC to DC and the excess voltage being shorted to ground by the regulator. If you run your bike at high rpm the permanent magnet generator will pump out much more voltage and current that has to be processed by the rectifiers and ground and therefore it produces even more amounts of heat that have to be dissipated to air via the regulator rectifier's cooling fins.

So don't stress your regulator rectifier and keep your engine rpm nice and low. You can do this by staying below the maximum speed limit in sixth gear. Hmmm I wonder why so many busa regulator rectifiers get fried?

Suzuki possibly sourced a few batch's of Rectumfriers off the same supplier as Honda Confused

I have no idea if my 08' Gen2 has been done when the recall was announced. As the previous owners barely rode the thing who knows if they took notice of the recall.

If it has been replaced it will most likely have a couple of regular cable ties securing the rectifier wiring loom to the metal subframe. The original Suzuki ties are sort of a one use thing. Paul.
